Elections 2023: Piraeus priority, battle for Crete

How much more “blue” can it be Crete; OUR Kyriakos Mitsotakis began his tours of the second pre-election period region from the mega-island, showing a strong symbolism of the great upheavals achieved there N.D.

On the 2019 election map, the entire island was pink, and after May 21, it was blue. His deposition SYRIZA in the last electoral contest this is clearly reflected in four constituencies. Although those who have carefully studied the results of the 2019 elections should not be too surprised by the current result. And this is because in three of the four regions, the difference between the first at that time SYRIZA and the second N.D. she was small. In Lassithi and Rethymno, in fact, the border.

V Lasithi, in 2019 SYRIZA won with a percentage of 34.57% and ND was 34.32%. V Rethymno SYRIZA had 36.99% and ND 36.55%. The difference was also small but not marginal in Chania, where SYRIZA received 37.35% and N.D. 34.05%. The biggest difference between the two parties was Heraklion, where SYRIZA won 43.22% of the votes, and ND. follow with 30.15%.

In the May 21 elections, the picture changed dramatically, differentiation was not limited to the change of first place. An important element is that ND managed to achieve a strong lead in all four regions, not a marginal one, while PASOK dynamically entered the “squad”, which managed to take second place in Rethymno and Lassithi and be third, but at arm’s length from the second SYRIZA, to Heraklion. The new electoral landscape has also led to significant changes in the distribution of seats, while changes to the electoral law will affect the distribution of seats after the June 25 elections.

In the 2019 elections, the ND won a total of seven seats in the four regions of Crete. He receives the same number of seats after the May 21 elections. In 2019, SYRIZA received six seats, which were reduced to three. PASOK, which had only one seat in Heraklion, has now won four seats and is represented in the three regions of the mega-island, having failed to elect an MP in Chania. The KKE won two seats in the May elections compared to one it won in the 2019 elections. Finally, in 2019, MeRA25 won one seat in Crete by electing Giorgos Logiadis in Heraklion. According to the analysis of the data, if the increased proportionality that will apply on June 25 is applied to the election results in May, the KKE will lose one seat in Chania to N.D. This means that Alexandros Marinakis of the KKE and ND will not be elected. the third candidate in the crosses, Alexandros Markoyannakis, will take the place. As for Heraklion, PASOK was interested in which seat Nikos Androulakis would eventually choose, as it was one of the three regions where the party’s president was running as a candidate. In the end he chose the headquarters of “A’ Thessaloniki” and thus Eleni Vatsina and Frangiskos Parasyris were elected. It remains to be seen whether Mr. Androulakis will elect Heraklion again in the upcoming elections and what seat he will take in the new parliament.

As for the smaller parties, the regions of Crete reflect a decline in MeRA25 dynamics, with the party registering a decline in its strength in Heraklion, where it won a seat in the previous elections, from 4.03%. to 2.9%, and in Chania from 4.85% to 3.28%. In Chania, the threshold for passage to Parliament, i.e. 3%, was the percentage of free float, which increased from 2.42% in 2019. Finally, the 2.46% achieved by the Victory in Rethymno is noteworthy.
