Shortly after his election to the New Democracy leadership, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis decided to move the party from Syngrou to Moshato. The move was also symbolic, he explained at the time, “revealing” that his office overlooked the western suburbs, areas where N.D. she almost always fell behind her opponents. Seven years later, the electoral geography has changed. N.D. won a historic victory in the popular areas of Attica, the likes of which have never been seen in its history.
Analysis of the results of the May 21 elections. presented by “K” today, shows that among the ten regions in which the New Republic achieved the largest increase in its forces, four are in Attica. This is Western Attica, where it grew by 7.6%, while SYRIZA fell 18 points, leaving N.D. to achieve a historic victory with a difference of almost … 24 points.
Great lift SW
Among the ten regions where North Dakota experienced the most growth, many regions of Attica, as well as Crete. With the start of a new election campaign for the president of ND, he will be in Megalonissos to “please”, as he said, the Cretans, while in the next 25 days a large base will be provided in Attica, also promoting a social sign that has a large value in the capital.
Greater drop in neutral density
Undoubtedly, Northern Greece is the region where N.D. marked the largest decline. The party of Kyriakos Velopoulos and NIKI, which is on the verge of entering the parliament, had an upward trend, “cutting off” the votes on the right. In Piraeus, a plan has already been drawn up for multiple visits by leading officials, as well as by Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself, to Northern Greece and especially to Thessaloniki, and President N.D. can also be found on Mount Athos.
A similar surprise occurred in Piraeus II, where N.D. rose by 7.3%, SYRIZA fell by 17.6% and finally ND won by 17 points, while in West Athens N.D. rose by 4.8%, SYRIZA fell by 15.9% and, finally, the region turned blue with a difference of almost 12 points. What led to this result? In Piraeus, this phenomenon is explained by the fact that the government of Mitsotakis had a definite plan for four years. In a pandemic, he did not leave the weakest alone, spreading a safety net. In addition, he refuted the “fears” that SYRIZA cultivated in 2019 that “Mizotakis is coming”, and citizens received practical support in the face of the energy crisis.
Little drop in SYRIZA
In the election battle in which SYRIZA collapsed, the prefectures that experienced the smallest drop were those prefectures that were already very low in 2019. Laconia and Argolis are typical examples, while in others, such as Kefalonia, it proportionally retained its strength, losing “only” 6.4%.
Biggest drop in SYRIZA
Undoubtedly, the collapse of SYRIZA came in popular quarters and in Crete, where there was a margin, as in 2019 they were fixed in her “castles”. Western Attica, II Piraeus and Western Athens, as well as 4 prefectures of Crete, with the first Heraklion, where it lost 20.5%, are in the top ten. Targeted tours are supposed to take place in these areas, applying what Nasos Iliopoulos constantly says: “talk again to the people who voted for us in 2019 and left.”
PASOK Big Lift
Accordingly, the largest increase in PASOK was recorded in Crete, in the three prefectures of Northern Greece – Xanthi, Florina and Kilkis, as well as in Arcadia, which has a strong “green” tradition. Nikos Androulakis will work in these prefectures in the next period.
Smaller lift PASOK
PASOK has not done well in urban centers. The top ten with the lowest growth across the country are the three regions of Attica: A’Piraeus, which grew by only 1 unit, A’Athens, with a growth of only 1.5%, and South Athens, with a growth of only 1.8%. In all three of these regions, PASOK received single digit votes, which means there is a lot of work to be done in the 25 days before the elections.
SYRIZA’s story about Mitsotakis’s “accuracy” fell on deaf ears. But the main thing is that for N.D. it is also the biggest justification, it is the desire for growth and stability, “which creates new jobs” and usually benefits the weakest. “Citizens got it” – says “K” a source in the government.explaining why popular areas were colored blue.
In general, N.D. recorded an increase in Attica from 39.6% in 2019 to 42.2%, which is a percentage higher than the country as a whole. Spectacular climbs include the Dodecanese, where S.V. reached 50% (49.93%).
Despite the decisive victory, there were areas where N.D. fallen. Of the ten prefectures with the most vote loss, six are in Northern Greece, indicating that while N.D. conquered the popular suburbs of Athens, “hit” her castle, which has always been Northern Greece. In particular, in addition to Rhodope, which, due to special demographic conditions, was the only “pink” prefecture in the country, the decrease occurred in Pieria by 6.4%, in Drama by 4.5%, in Kastoria by 3.5% and in B Thessaloniki with 3%. The explanation lies in the attractiveness of the more right-wing forms of ND, such as the “Greek Solution” and the newly created “Niki”, whose percentages in all the aforementioned prefectures, and also to a greater extent in Northern Greece, were high.
In N.D. they attribute the reversal to a refutation of the fears SYRIZA cultivated in 2019 that “a neoliberal coup is coming.”
As for Nika, nine of the ten municipalities with the highest percentage are in Northern Greece. The only municipality in the top ten that is not in Northern Greece is Amorgos, but there is an explanation for this as well. On the island is the monastery of the Virgin Chozoviotissa, under the influence of Mount Athos, which gave high interest to Nike. At the same time, Velopoulou’s party also recorded an increase of about 1%, having firepower in Northern Greece.
It is significant that in the municipality of Ampelokipi – Menemeni in Western Thessaloniki, Hellenic Solution recorded the largest increase in the country – 5.2 points, from 6.2% in 2019 to 11.4%. Growth was also impressive in the municipality of Kordelios Evosmos, as well as in Western Thessaloniki, where it reached 13% from 8.5%, and, accordingly, in the neighboring municipality of Pavlos Melas it reached 11.7% from 6.8%.
The official opposition, which collapsed in all counties, set a negative record. In particular, out of 332 municipalities across the country, there has been an increase in only three, and all of them are in the Rhodope prefecture (Arrianon, Iasmos and Maronia Sapon). The biggest decline in the prefectures of SYRIZA occurred in its former strongholds, namely West Attica and Crete, where Nikos Androulakis’ PASOK showed significant growth in three of the four prefectures. In Heraklion, SYRIZA lost 20.5%, in Western Attica 18.2%, in Lassithi 17%, in Chania and Rethymnon 16.9% and 16.2% respectively. The explanation, apart from the conversion of Nikos Androulakis by origin, is that the official opposition was cut off from the social strata with which the centre-left had an identity relationship and who had crossed over to the ND.
It is also interesting how PASOK moved, which, as a rule, grew. Its best region was, as mentioned above, Crete, while it is noteworthy that Attica is nowhere in the top ten with the biggest rises. In contrast, in the top ten with the smallest increase of PASOK, there are three regions of Attica: Athens A, Sector South and Piraeus A, making PASOK a provincial party with a major problem in Athens.
Great rise of the Greek solution
The party of Kyriakos Velopoulos, contrary to predictions, marked growth at the tip of a spear, of course, in Northern Greece. Among the ten municipalities in which the largest increase was in Western Thessaloniki: Ampelokipoi – Menemeni, Pavlos Melas, Cordelio – Evosmos, the percentages were in double digits, while the second largest increase was recorded in Aspropyrgos due to the large number of repatriates.
Higher win rates
The debuting NIKI also had Northern Greece as its firepower: Katerini, Naoussa, Thermi, Skidra, Pella, Oreokastro are among the top regions and also has a relatively strong presence on Amorgos due to the great influence of the Hozobiotissa monastery.
small islands
Important conclusions are drawn from small details, showing that the strategy of N.D. was completely successful. N.D. won a total of 325 out of 332 municipalities across the country. Notable is the very large increase in the number of small islands such as Halki, Anafi, Leros and Tilos, indicating that the model he applied in Halki and the importance he attached to small islands were warmly received. From there, PASOK won the Municipality, Lasithi Plateau, beating N.D. However, there is an explanation that this is the village of the mother of Nikos Androulakis.
