Elections 2023: Disputes and own goals in the economy

In the field of economics, pre-election opposition of parties. Issues of tax policy cause disagreement between N.D., SYRIZA and PASOK for the realism of the proposals and economic data. At the same time, the candidates’ mistakes are “exploited” by opponents to the fullest. A typical example is the question of its possible increase LIGHT which arose from the statements of the “green” MP and prompted Harilaou Trikoupis to intervene.

Since the stakes for choosing the central government were determined in the elections of May 21 with an underlined predominance of ND, the pre-election period before the second elections is focused on individual parameters party programs. At the same time, party headquarters identify incorrect language, verbal exaggeration or signs of ignorance of political opponents in order to use them to their advantage.

Thus, the central tax policy options in the parties’ programs have been at the center of a fierce debate over the past two days. It started with a debate on PASOK’s policy forecast of a gradual increase in the taxation of distributed business profits and continued with a discussion on the issue of taxation of excess profits, SYRIZA’s proposals and ND’s objections. for options that will affect the competitiveness of the economy and attract investment.

SYRIZA representative Popi Tsapanidou spoke yesterday (SKAI) about the extraordinary taxation of excess income, excess profits of large companies. Answering a question, he said that excess profit is defined as it is accepted in the EU. identified and taxed them in many countries. He did not specify which businesses the measure applies to, insisting that the taxation applies to those who have registered excess income. ND representative Akis Skertsos, who participated in the same show, spoke about the taxation of 3.5 billion based on the position of SYRIZA and the risk of investment flight. In her next statement, Ms. Tsapanidou referred to energy and oil refining companies’ excess profits of more than 6 billion euros according to their 2022 balance sheets. energy companies, as well as in “supermarkets, large grocery chains, large logistics companies”, referring to industries with super profits.

PASOK President Nikos Androulakis, in his statements from Chios, stressed that “we have a different perception and this discussion is well open”, while he was quick to clarify that there is no provision for an increase in ENFIA anywhere in the party’s program. . He added that 2/3 of the taxes are indirect, hitting the most vulnerable and the middle class, and 150 listed companies have tripled their profits.

Nikos Christodoulakis, who is responsible for developing the PASOK economic program, spoke to (SKAI) about fairer taxation based on the program’s provisions regarding the taxation of dividends and parental benefits. With regard to windfall profits, he spoke of the emergency taxation of “the soaring profits that the energy companies made in connection with the crisis and which the government also promised to make.” Harilau Trikoupi’s sources emphasize that the policy reference to the taxation of extra profits is related to the extra profits of banks from the interest rate policy of the ECB, which created a gap between deposit and lending rates, and the taxation of extra profits of energy companies, i.e. electricity producers, suppliers and refineries.

Bitter confrontation between Schertzos and Tsapanidos over SYRIZA’s position on the extraordinary taxation of “surplus profits” of large companies.

However, in relation to superprofits in the energy sector, they have already received:

1) EUR 373.5 million emergency contribution of 90% of excess profits to electricity producers for the 9 months from October 2021 to June 2022.

2) 3.26 billion euros from electricity producers after the implementation of the windfall recovery mechanism.

3) Taxation of refineries at the rate of 33% on 2022 profits was not charged, as the relevant KYA is pending. Revenues are estimated at 650 million euros.

4) The excess profits of electricity suppliers for the period August-December 2022 are not collected, as the relevant ministerial decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is expected. According to Skrekas’ legislation, 60% of the excess profits were to be collected by March 31st. According to preliminary estimates, the state will collect about 300-340 million euros.

Under the microscope N.D., SYRIZA, PASOK, lies of deputies

Like an extremely contagious virus, the lies of candidates and leaders during the long, now doubled, pre-election period hit ND, SYRIZA and PASOK. Others talk about “own goals”. These are statements whose content casts a shadow on the image of their party and is used by political opponents.

So far, the incidents related to Kumunduru have been the most discussed, as they are estimated to have contributed to the vertical fall in the percentage of SYRIZA in the elections. However, other things are recorded in the new election campaign – not only in SYRIZA, but also in N.D. and PASOK. It is significant that they are listed in reverse chronological order:

Yesterday’s statements of St. Parastatides, the first to cross paths with PASOK in Kilkis, which was interpreted as a programmatic plan to increase ENFIA, forced Hara. Trikoupi noted that “PASOK nowhere in its program speaks of an increase in ENFIA.”

Harilaou Trikoupi, on the occasion of the placement of St. Parastatides was forced to clarify that “PASOK nowhere in its program speaks of an increase in ENFIA.”

For his part, ND spokesman Akis Skertsos was forced yesterday to publicly denounce insults against teachers included in his social media post by the party’s parliamentary candidate Mr. Psarianos: “Mr. Psarianos’ statements are obviously reprehensible. He was summoned and gave an explanation,” Skertzos said. At the same time, SYRIZA’s 2019 parliamentary candidate and municipal councilor in Thessaloniki municipality, Glykeria Kalfakakou, took part in the meeting to adopt a resolution in favor of the expatriate mayor of Heimarras, Beleris, made furor after talking about “nationalist sauces.” While N. Flambouraris argued for the victory of the ND that “the world can be in this period, after the pandemic and the economic crisis, unsafe, and anyone who appears in a suit security, cultivates the belief that it can retreat.”

The previous days were also discussed: in N.D. Announcement. Georgiadis with his statement that the goal of the upcoming competition is to obtain 180 seats for (one) constitutional review. He should have intervened Mrs Mitsotakisin order to stop the negative noise about the “blue” party. At PASOK, in charge of economics and taxation, Eleni Chronopoulou.

As mentioned above, the violations began even before the May elections, especially in SYRIZA, with the typical cases of G. Katrugalos (increase in self-employed insurance premiums), T. Foti (an individual income of 5,000 euros defines the middle class), or and Eucl. Tsakalot and G. Dragasakis (for the “government of the vanquished”).
