Turkish Thalassolikos will be postponed

With an eye on the second round of tomorrow’s elections in Türkiye Athens is located because, despite the relative certainty of his re-election Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Hellas he will be in the provisional government for about a month. Accommodation for experienced persons (B. Cascarelis to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Alc. Stephanis in the Ministry of National Defense) in critical positions ensures coherence and continuity until June 25.

Over the past 24 hours, there have been reports of further cuts in Athens military training from Turkey. Although the Thalassolikos 2023 Turkish Navy exercise was scheduled before the start of the official moratorium of the Papoulia-Yılmaz memorandum from June 15 to September 15 (June 1 to 4 and June 6 to 12), information was received in Athens yesterday from Ankara regarding the idea that to postpone or even cancel it. According to military sources, this information dispels the question that arose in Athens that the Turkish authorities have not yet issued the required NAVTEX, since in these planned exercises it is customary to reserve areas several days in advance. It should be noted that, on the contrary, Eastern Mediterranean, i.e. in the south of Turkey they hold some kind of naval universities. While word of the postponement of Thalassolykos ’23 reached Athens through official channels, the upcoming elections on Sunday, as well as the continued reticence that characterizes Greece’s assessment of any news coming from Turkey, lead to a particularly cautious attitude.

It is recalled that, as K was the first to report, an informal moratorium on exercises has been resolved between Athens and Ankara even until June 15, even with an agreement at a higher level. Both sides have actually reached even a nominal list of canceled exercises. From the Greek side, exercises with the stamp are canceled “Triena” Navy, while Athens suspended the use of three legal shooting ranges in the Aegean for the entire summer. It is also noted that in the same context, ministers and politicians did not visit the islands of the eastern Aegean during the Easter period. However “Thalassolikos ’23” from Turkey and “Storm” on the Greek side, these were the only naval gymnasiums that remained outside the moratorium, although it was agreed that they would take place on a much more limited scale.
