Albania: Beleri’s victory at Heimarra is a heavy political defeat for Rama

Like the heavy political defeat of Prime Minister Edi Rama“read” the impending dominance of the previously arrested minority candidate for mayor of the Heimarra municipality, Fredis Beleris.

At the end of the vote count, it was announced that Beleris had won by a few dozen votes over the candidate of the Socialist Party, also an expatriate, Giorgos Gorosh – the result has not yet been officially announced.

Now the eyes are turned to Tirana, waiting for the reaction of Rama, who took the “battle of Himarra” “for himself.”

Beleris’ victory, if confirmed, appears to have been a minority reflex reaction to Rama’s campaign of political and moral discredit.(his party’s candidate was also supported by the Albanian opposition), culminating in the arrest and pre-trial detention of Beleris on the eve of the vote.

What’s next

Now the facts are changing, but this does not mean that Beleris will “sit down” in the mayor’s chair from tomorrow.

There will be recounts, objections, and if they do not work, then Rama will be able to activate the lawsuit.

On Saturday, the Avlona court ruled not on the merits of the “vote buying” charge, but on whether his arrest was lawful, and ruled in the affirmative, ordering his pre-trial detention pending trial.

The “case” has now been referred to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) in Tirana, who will decide whether his pre-trial detention will continue or whether he will be released.

After the same prosecutor’s office makes a decision on this matter, it will consider the case on the merits, which may take weeks or even several months.

Until then, the newly elected mayor will either remain in custody or be released, but under a court hostage regime that Rama can use to keep him out of the mayor’s office.

Hence the fear that we may be at the beginning of a new “vendetta” between Rama and the Hellenism of Himarra. It remains to be seen how the international factor will react if an attempt is made to overturn the will of expatriates outside the ballot box.

In any case, Heimarra’s result spoils Rama’s festive atmosphere of his dominance in municipal elections throughout the territory.
