Athens responds to Tripoli government

Its complete opposite Athens to her objections Libya With regard to the boundaries of its maritime zones, as expressed in the oral communication of the Government of Tripoli to Cairo, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the Organization, Evangelos Sekeris, states in his letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In letter A/77/865, Mr. Sekeris notes that “the proposed eastern maritime boundaries of Libya violate the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) established under international law by an agreement between the Government of the Hellenic Republic and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt regarding the delimitation of the EEZ between the two countries, signed on August 6, 2020”.

In practice, with this letter, Athens supports Cairo, with which they coordinate their actions at the United Nations level against the government of Tripoli. Mr. Sekeris reiterates that the 2019 Turkish-Libyan Memorandum is irregular and invalid both in terms of international law and in terms of Libya’s 2015 political agreement, which also requires ratification by the country’s House of Representatives, which it didn’t. “These Libyan claims are in gross violation of international law and, in addition, pose a threat to peace and stability in the Mediterranean.”

Mr. Sekeris’ letter indicates, among other things, that Athens remains ready to settle its differences with all the neighboring countries of the Eastern Mediterranean. In particular, it states that “While retaining all rights under international law, Greece would like to confirm that it remains firmly committed to resolving any issue of demarcation with neighboring countries in the Eastern Mediterranean by peaceful means, in good faith and in accordance with the law. seas, as has already happened with Italy and Egypt.
