Alexis Tsipras and SYRIZA say goodbye to Mirsini Zorba

With a message on his personal social media accounts, the President of SYRIZA-P.S. Alexis Tsiprasrefers to her loss Mirsini Zorba

In his post, he states: “The Mirsini of Culture, the Book, Refugee Rights, Cultural Democracy, the eternal presence wherever ideas become a material force, is no longer with us.

Mirsini Zorba has honored the government of SYRIZA with her presence during difficult times from her position as Minister of Culture. It will not just remain in our memory and in our hearts. Her work and ideas will accompany us.

“The power of ideas that do not cease to exist and manage to radiate out of time,” she wrote in her farewell post, will always be with us.”

SYRIZA message

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance also issued a message of condolence, in which the main opposition party “bids farewell to Mirsini Zorba with sadness and respect.” As the saying goes:

Mirsini Zorba was a special woman who left her mark on modern Greek history with her thoughts and actions. A fighter of the anti-dictatorial movement in the spirit of the Renovationist Left, a translator and publisher of the works of Antonio Gramsci, a participant in collective projects that changed the intellectual landscape of the country, Mirsini Zorba combined an insatiable passion for social justice with deep reflections on the world around us.

This combination led her to establish the National Book Center and her ongoing search for innovative reading policies, publishing policies, and national public libraries.

Politically active, a member of the European Parliament and a frequent public speaker, she has channeled her energy into the Children’s Rights Network.

She was director of the office of former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, and her recent book on the personality of Andreas Papandreou stands out among her writings.

In 2018, he took up the post of Minister of Culture in the SYRIZA government, where he participated in small and big battles for a new radical policy in culture. Her vision of cultural democracy is the great legacy of this kind and militant personality. And this goal is and will be a constant guideline for SYRIZA-PS.

We express our deepest condolences to our partner Antonis Liakos and her family.
