According to a statement from three lawyers, he claims that Roberta Metzola’s office informed him on Good Friday of the request to lift his immunity. “He has full confidence in the Belgian judiciary, with which he intends to actively cooperate,” the statement said.

Statement by his supporters

“Mr Georgoulis was informed on Good Friday, 14 April 2023, by the Office of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsolas, of the request from the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office to lift his parliamentary immunity following a complaint filed against him, of which he was completely unaware.

On the same day, he responded, also demanding that his immunity be lifted in order to expedite procedures and clarify the matter. On Monday, 17 April 2023, a similar Bureau statement was made in plenary.

Mr. Georgoulis formally and unequivocally denies the allegations against him, and he certainly wants all light to be shed on this case, which has just been brought to his attention, as soon as possible. He has full confidence in the Belgian judiciary, with which he intends to actively cooperate.

His Belgian lawyers Me Cédric Vergauwen and Me Olivia Venet have already contacted the investigator and will be in touch in due course in this case, of which Mr Georgoulis is presumed innocent.

Yesterday, a member of the European Parliament was expelled from SYRIZA “until his case is clarified.”

“Member of Parliament Alexis Georgoulis is being excluded from the Eurogroup SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance in connection with the information we received today about the complaint against him and in view of the need to fully clarify the relevant case,” the corresponding statement reads, in which he refers to “clearly false and a complaint about slander.”

“Unfortunately, we live in difficult and dangerous times. Much to my surprise, I am informed that a deliberately false and defamatory complaint has been filed against me regarding an incident allegedly occurring three years ago.

Faced with this false and insulting attack, which is carried out – probably not by accident – a few days before the national elections, I intend to lead my fight for justice for the truth and the restoration of my name, demanding the removal of my European parliamentary immunity, ”the statement said.

Chronopoulou’s first statement in the Georgoulis case: “I reported a rape.”

It is noted that Eleni Chronopoulou, a member of the PASOK Political Council, European Commission Legal Counsel, made the first public statement on the Georgoulis case on Tuesday afternoon.

“Three years ago, at the beginning of 2020, I filed a complaint against a certain Greek MEP for crimes of rape and bodily harm,” she notes, among other things, in her social media post.
