Corfu: Tsipras observed the custom of breaking boots

The custom of breaking boots was experienced by the president of SYRIZA-PS Alexis Tsipraswho is in Corfu with his family to spend the Easter days.

Alexis Tsipras climbed onto the balcony of a house in the city center and threw a red jug, while his two sons also followed the custom.

Mr. Tsipras arrived at Corfu Square a little earlier, where he had the opportunity to chat, take pictures and exchange wishes with the people who were there.

The President of SYRIZA-PS took part in the procession with the epitaph of St. Spyridon, which, according to tradition, takes place in Corfu on the morning of Great Saturday, before the first Sunday.

Meanwhile, thousands of visitors and residents of Corfu at 11:00 a.m. witnessed the impressive and noisy custom of breaking boots.

After the first Resurrection, the ringing of the bell gave the signal. Countless jugs of water clattered from windows and balconies.

The jugs were mostly painted red, but also decorated with images. The windows of the houses were decorated with red flags – a custom that gives solemnity to this day.

Immediately after that, the city philharmonic society created a festive atmosphere with cheerful marches.

During the breaking of boots, the custom of mastela was revived in the heart of the old city.

The custom, which came from the depths of centuries, is symbolic. It sends a signal of support to those in need because those who dove into the barrel were the city’s porters. From Good Monday, a wooden barrel is placed, decorated with laurels and filled with water. Believers toss coins and make wishes. With the first Sunday, whoever dives will receive the money.
