Sakellaropoulou: Holy Week mourning sweetened by promise of Resurrection

The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, sends a message of hope on the occasion of the climax of the Divine Drama.

Characteristically, he notes that “our thoughts in these days inevitably turn to those who have gone missing,” and emphasizing that “no matter how we are tested, no matter how heavy our cross, the endless light will dispel the darkness and the resurrection the anthem will glorify the triumph of life over death.”

In her Facebook post, Ms Sakellaropoulou states:

“In these days when the Divine drama is in full swing, our thoughts inevitably turn to those who have gone missing. We again find them in positions of epitaph lamentation, we remember them as we follow the procession. Virgin Mary singing “O light of my eyes, my sweetest child, how can I bury now covered?” it is the symbol of every mother who cries for her lost child.

We recently experienced a tragedy that shocked us all and caused irreparable pain. Individual and social trauma. And in the vicinity of the war, they continue with unrelenting violence, great natural disasters, countless losses of innocent victims. The world is on fire and suffering. But just as the sorrow of Holy Week is sweetened by the promise of the Resurrection, so at the bottom of the dark tunnel of sorrow that overshadows the planet, a comforting light shines. In addition to loss and pain, in addition to shock and despair, we find the strength to continue. Strength drawn from the message of love for one’s neighbor, giving up one’s ego for another, rebirth and hope. The highest symbolism of the greatest holiday of Christianity reminds us that, no matter how tempted we are, no matter how heavy our cross, endless light will dispel the darkness and the Sunday hymn will glorify the triumph of life over death.

Christ is risen!”.
