Study: But Party Says, Its Voter Says Different

The results are revealing and somewhat surprising. Etheron Institute research which captures an X-ray of potential voters on May 21 on issues related to politics, the economy, institutions, democracy, as well as important ideological issues. The study also captures voter opinions by party.

“Party voters may think very differently than the leadership of the party they vote for, or the official position of the party,” he said. Gerasimos Moschonasprofessor of comparative politics at Panteio.

Unexpectedly, 52.95% of ND. states that democracy in Greece would be better if citizens participated more in popular assemblies and referendums. 60.1% of citizens say that they are dissatisfied with their financial situation, and 24.5% answered that they are neither dissatisfied nor satisfied. Only 15.2% say they are satisfied with their financial situation. Interestingly, however, 37% of those who seem satisfied with their financial situation are potential New Democracy voters, while, correspondingly, only 5.1% of potential SYRIZA voters claim to be financially satisfied.

Politics and institutions

OUR parliamentary democracy shows very high acceptance rates. 83% of citizens agree that this is the best state. However, at the same time, 69.7% express dissatisfaction with how it works in Greece. The study also reveals an anti-democratic core of about 13%, which, as indicated in specific cases dictatorship it might even be preferable. With the introduction of dictatorship under certain conditions, 58% of potential voters of the Greek party agree, as do 33.3% of those who said they would vote for the Greek decision. However, 84.9% do not agree at all with the introduction of the dictatorship.

All major institutions that make up the Greek political system have a low level of trust. The researchers indicated that the question was about the institution, not the person currently representing it. However, the fact that the survey was conducted immediately after the Tempe accident definitely influenced the responses. A large and even overwhelming percentage of citizens have little or no confidence in the President of the Republic: 63.7% (35.1% very or very), the institution of the Prime Minister 60.6%, the government 64.3%, 68.9%% Parliament, 83.2% political parties, 69% judiciary, 91.6% media and 65.1% independent authorities.

Greece and the EU

64.9% of citizens assess Greece’s participation in the European Union as positive, and 32% as negative/rather negative. 37.6% of SYRIZA voters are negative about Greece’s participation in the EU, but the percentage of negative opinion jumps to 70.4% for voters for the Greek solution and to 68.5% for the “Greeks”. Only 69.4% believe that it is better to stay in the euro.

The euro is supported by 92.5% of potential ND voters, 68.7% of SYRIZA, 89.1% of PASOK, and 58.4% of MeRA25. 71.4% of Greek Solution voters are in favor of the drachma, as are 57% of Greeks. The study was conducted by aboutpeople with online and telephone interviews on a nationwide sample of 4,182 people over the age of 17 between March 17 and 23, 2023.
