Elections: leaders, debates, conversations and difficulties

The electoral tradition in our country wants a second opinion polls party to be what he asks to beI argue between leaders and the prior party to evaluate the facts and circumstances and, accordingly, to answer or not to answer the request. It is noteworthy that in 2009 Kostas Karamanlis also asked to have a second debate with him George Papandreou just before the election. OUR Alexis Tsipras yesterday threw him a glove Kyriakos Mitsotakisby inviting him to the discussion. From Koumoundourou, they consistently supported this request for a long time, since SYRIZA ranks second in public opinion polls. In addition, as a rule, the political leader in power is called upon to answer more pressing questions regarding the actions of his government. IN N.D. they avoid “yes” or “no” answers, at least for now, and refer to a discussion that is now starting and it remains to be seen how it will develop. From Harilaou Trikoupi, they are already stating that citizens cannot fall into the trap of restrictive dialogue between the leaders of the two main parties, that such debate should be left to other political leaders as well. After all, for small parties, the television competition for leadership, especially given the restrictive conditions that usually take place in Greece and the “sterile” environment created, is a good opportunity to position themselves on all the important issues facing an extended audience. In any case, in principle, everyone says “yes” to the leaders’ teleconference, but often the agreement is violated in detail.

However, we have been witnessing a confrontation between political leaders since September 2015, as in the elections of 2019, when the inter-party commission agreed to hold debates with the participation of all political leaders, as a result, there was no agreement on the date and plan of the shipwreck.

As the first debate of political leaders in our country, the meeting Andreas Papandreou, Constantinou Mitsotakis and Charilaos Florakis at Pantheion University in 1990 in a debate moderated by Giannis Kapsis. Although the televised sessions were more like one-on-one lectures on foreign policy and the state of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was something new for political morality.

In 1996, they “dueled” on television. Kostas Simitis And Miltiadis Evert, in the first debate, hosted on the premises of a television studio, where the two political leaders had two minutes to answer each question. Antonis Samaras, as head of the Political Spring, sent a letter to the National Radio and Television Council complaining about the exclusion of other political leaders from debates.

Ten days before the 2000 elections Kostas Simitis he again took part in a televised match, this time face to face with him Kostas Karamanlis. In the 2004 elections, debates took place with the participation of all political leaders: George Papandreou, Kostas Karamanlis, Aleka Papariga, Nikos Konstantinopoulos and Dimitris Tsovolas they took part and developed their arguments. The 2007 election debate took place in the shadow of the devastating fires in the Peloponnese, with again all the political leaders Costas Karamanlis, Giorgos Papandreou, Alekas Paparigas, Alecu Alavanou, Giorgos Karatsaferis and Stelios Papatemeliswho again answered questions without being able to chat.

In 2009, the debates were held with the participation of all political leaders, and in the second – only Kostas Karamanlis and George Papandreou. In a debate involving all political leaders, Alexis Tsipras spoke for the first time as head of the Coalition. Then followed a difficult memorial period, when the explosive political climate was clearly not conducive to television confrontation. In September 2015, a debate took place with the participation of all political leaders (Alexis Tsipras, Vangelis Meimarakis, Stavros Theodorakis, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, Panagiotis Lafazanis, Fofi Gennimata and Panos Kammenos) and the second between Alexis Tsipras and Evangelos Meimarakis, who even protested the director, stating that the shot he chose made Mr. Tsipras taller.
