Mitsotakis: With or without European money, Evros fence will be completed

“With or without European money, the Evros fence will be completed,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed during his morning visit to Gerakas.

The prime minister referred to an amendment promoted by EP Vice President Dimitris Papadimoulis that “categorically opposes the use of any EU funding for the construction of fences” in the Euros (albeit without naming it specifically).

In particular, he said: “I want to remind you who those who supported this and who are still facing this difficult task of securing the borders of the country. Just yesterday, the SYRIZA MEP backed an amendment urging Europe not to fund the Euros project. What is needed is not disapproval, but condemnation.

Mr. Mitsotakis said that he would visit Evros tomorrow, where he would sign an extension of the fence project. “As a result of the Greek intervention, Europe is changing its attitude and recognizing the importance attached at the European level to the protection of European borders,” he stressed and reiterated that, with or without European funding, the fence on Evros will be built normally.

For the rest, the prime minister compared the government of N.D. with SYRIZA, emphasizing the dangers of non-governmental involvement and projecting N.D. as a force for the stability of the country.

Detailed statement from the Prime Minister:

“There is only one compelling proposal for governance in Greece today, and that is a strong New Democracy the next day at the helm of the country. And because we hear a lot. First or second vote? Now we have one ballot box. This is the ballot box for May 21st. A strong New Democracy in this ballot box will determine who will rule for the next four years, which party and whom the citizens ultimately want to be Prime Minister. Because, rest assured, in the end, this is the main dilemma: who will take responsibility for running the country, who will represent Greece abroad, who will take Greece’s rightful seat on the European Council, who will negotiate with the European Union. . These elections are critical.

Who will resist a neighbor who has shown that he can be very aggressive with us, but who can also negotiate with a neighbor, provided that we can really find a field for understanding, always guided by international law. Just yesterday, the SYRIZA MEP backed an amendment calling on the European Commission not to fund the Euros fence. Hear them all (…) No need for disapproval, just judgment and the right choice for the next day. With or without European money, the Evros fence will be completed.”

Theodorikakos vs. Papadimoulis

The minister for the protection of citizens, Takis Theodorikakos, is also mentioned in the decree of D. Papadimoulis on the fence in Evros.

“Mr. Papadimoulis had to be expelled from SYRIZA. If he does not expel him, this means that SYRIZA fully accepts its unacceptable position in the European Parliament, therefore it leaves the country’s borders unprotected again and supports behavior that creates a huge problem for security and the fight against illegal immigration,” said Mr. Theodorikakos at SKAI.

The Minister of Citizens’ Protection emphasized that the completion of the construction of the fence along the 140 km of the Greek-Turkish border is a clear decision of the Prime Minister. He recalled that 37.5 km have already been built, and tomorrow, in the presence of the Prime Minister, a contract will be signed in Euros for the construction of an additional 35 km worth 100 million euros, which is expected to be covered by the regular budget of our country.

T. Theodorikakos urged SYRIZA to take an official position on the construction of the fence. Responding to the accusations of his deputies that international law is being violated on Evros, he noted that the Greek border guards are constantly saving the lives of unfortunate people in the frozen waters of Evros.

Finally, he announced that a tender was being held for the recruitment of 150 additional border guards in Kavala and Rodopi.
