Strengths and weaknesses of the trio on the eve of the elections

Electoral headquarters of parties were criticized after the announcement of their date elections. ND, SYRIZA and PASOK are finalizing a strategy by which they will bid for the citizen’s vote by prioritizing the advantages they see as having and points of superiority over their opponents. However, each side has its own “weights”, which opponents will seek to use.

N.D.: Trump cards and gray areas on the way to elections

Election meetings continue in Maximos Palacewhere all the facts are laid out on the carpet in view of the elections. Such as “K” also wrote yesterday, the government’s election campaign will unfold in two phases: one has a milestone before Easter, where the focus will be on what has been done in four years, and the second part covers the period from Easter to elections, where the burden will fall on what needs to be done in the new four-year period. On this road, N.D. it has major advantages to recommend, but also disadvantages, the result of four years of manipulations and mistakes.

Advantages

In terms of benefits, Megaro Maximos dominates. first matter of consistency. Government sources told K that the “Truth Accord” proposed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis before he was elected Prime Minister was scrupulously adhered to, as four years later key policy provisions of the ND, such as permanent tax breaks and increased in retirement, that’s a fact. “N.D. recovery of the middle class from over-taxation SYRIZA was elected under the flag, and it was achieved,” the same sources say.

Secondly the key advantage that will be promoted during the election campaign is the overcoming of crises. In four years, several crises have occurred: the Greek-Turkish crisis, the health crisis due to coronovirus, the war on European soil and the subsequent energy crisis that horizontally affected everyday life. “The government of N.D. he has dealt with all crises seriously and effectively,” says a government source and asks “whether the same will happen to the SYRIZA government,” posing a dilemma as to whom citizens will trust in a fluid international environment. third a key advantage for the government arises precisely from this changing international environment, which also affects the domestic environment. Already the prime minister in his last cabinet called on his ministers to talk about what is happening in European countries, where different parties will “co-rule”. Almost everywhere, including in institutional Germany, the complexity of decision-making creates slow governments that are unable to solve problems. This issue will be covered by N.D. politely: “What do you want? Should we move forward or stick to the co-government balance?” there will be a question for the Greek citizens.

The House of Maximus will contribute to the implementation of the “Agreement of Truth” with the relief of the middle class and overcoming a number of crises.

In the pre-election period, the government will also have to face the main disadvantages that the four-year rule brings with it. First, its institutional profile was undermined by the problem of wiretapping. The fact that EYP was subordinate to Maximos makes it difficult to manage.

The second difficult issue to be resolved by the government concerns the Tempe accident. Here, the responsibility may not only be state responsibility, since it is about issues such as what the previous government overlooked or how well the station master performed his duties, but the issue is more emotional than wiretapping, since there were deaths, search for clear answers and responsibility. Moreover, the government from Tempi was struck at the core of its narrative, which was that the “old Greece” was left behind, which in practice turned out not to be the case.

Alliances

Finally, the disadvantage of the government is that after PASOK’s clear position that it does not govern jointly with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, it appears on the political scene without alliances, as it did in the past when it actually united. with the so-called “front against SYRIZA” under the leadership of Mr. Mitsotakis.

Over the past four years, SYRIZA has failed to come close to 30% in opinion polls. This fact deprived Alexis Tsipras of the opportunity to have the look of a “prime minister in waiting”, which would have greatly affected the critical performance indicator of the victory. The Tempe accident marked the country, highlighted the pathologies of many years, and Alexis Tsipras, suspending all party activity, paid tribute in an undertone to the families of the victims. However, this was a turning point for the official opposition, which for the first time saw a four-point gap with New Democracy on average. In Komunduru, they behave with restraint, because so far they do not see any benefit from corruption in the government. And the “dock theory” that requires passengers on one train to wait before boarding the next train may be true, but there isn’t much time left. On the positive side, Alexis Tsipras has long since started his tour (on Friday he will perform in Kalamata), and the ballots are almost ready against the background of the Central Committee meeting on April 8-9.

Inner sides

In SYRIZA, trends have been muted for a long time. Alexis Tsipras, in fact, “cleaned up” the intra-party game after last year’s conference. The latest “episode” in Koumunduru concerned the possible exclusion of Pavlos Polakis from the Chania ballot. With the “amnesty letter” to the deputy, the crisis was overcome, but the imprint of the decision of the Political Secretariat is not yet visible. The former Deputy Minister of Health is expected to give impetus to the party in Crete and to the generally more radical public attracted by the sharp discourse. After Tempi, Pavlos Polakis can be especially useful to anti-system audiences who may have leaned towards Janis Varoufakis. However, the medal has two sides. Because the centrist, moderate public has never seen the fiery posts of the deputy of Chania.

Meeting

Yesterday the executive apparatus held a meeting with the political secretariat. Dimitris Tzanakopoulos was also present, as the main “menu” concerned the government program, which will be ready in a few days. SYRIZA enters the pre-election period “from the right” because it took care of developing its programs from the very beginning of its stay in the official opposition. They have been updated several times and early next week, Alexis Tsipras and financial staff will present a plan for private debt and first home protection. What “drives” SYRIZA? Thessaloniki program 2014. The government has always challenged Kumundur’s economic proposals, arguing that past bidding has not benefited the country. Things are confused with Harilaou Trikoupi. SYRIZA agrees with PASOK in that Nikos Androulakis expressed the idea of the need to implement a social democratic program, and both parties agree that the government should be formed from the first Sunday. However, the “veto” Mr. Androulakis placed on Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras for prime minister, as well as Janis Varoufakis for cooperation, makes the “equation” particularly difficult. Alexis Tsipras is scheduled to address Parliament at noon this afternoon.

In the harmonious “combination” of the faction’s historical roots with elements of renewal and modernization, they invest Harilau Trikoupi on the way to elections. “PASOK is a party with very specific characteristics, with a long history and proposals, with strong electoral orientation,” says senior leader Harilaou Trikoupi. Reconnecting with an audience that fanatically supported the party until the beginning of the last decade is a key issue. The restoration of the PASOK name and logo was the first step towards an emotional reconnection with the social base. “For a part of the electorate, they remain very powerful symbols and determine voting behavior,” adds the same leader. For older voters, this strategy can work.

New voters

For the younger voters in PASOK, they are investing in a leader, a program and the objective fact that over the past 20 years the party has been responsible for running the country for a short time. Nikos Androulakis believes that he has a comparative advantage over his political opponents, and especially the leaders of the two main parties, in that he does not tolerate deterioration in governance and therefore cannot attribute to him the failures and mistakes that cost the country’s course. At the same time, PASOK has been striving, and largely succeeding, in renewing its performance potential. New are those close to the chairman of the party, and leaders who have taken on the burden of promoting communications. The update of the ballots is also important, despite the criticism that in many cases this is the successor generation of the old leaders. Similar updating efforts were made for the program with the aim, as already mentioned, to include as specific as possible answers to the main problems of the time. These elements are considered to be the party’s advantages over its opponents.

However, the road to elections is not easy. For a significant part of the voters, the party is still considered the party of power, identified with the negative characteristics of the post-colonial period, which largely led to the economic crisis. In addition, the difficult part is the voting fatigue seen in recent months, due to which rates are approaching 10%. Moreover, as the elections approach, conditions of extreme polarization are expected to continue, which will make it even more difficult to attract the attention of the electorate.

Harilaou Trikoupi believes that the increase – after the Tempe accident – in the pool of undecided voters creates favorable conditions for changing these correlations.

Resignation letter to the European Parliament

PASOK President Nikos Androulakis is initiating the process of his resignation from the European Parliament, as he has previously stated. He has already sent the corresponding letter in electronic form to the competent services of the European Parliament. Mr Androulakis has decided he will step down as soon as the election date is announced and is now taking the necessary steps to become a candidate in the May 21 nationwide election, his associates said. The approval of his resignation by the European Parliament is expected after Easter. His place will be taken by the first runner-up on the KINAL ballot, which is Nikos Papandreou, who will be the party’s sole representative in the European Parliament, as Eva Kaili, who was also elected on the KINAL ballot, was removed from the list. party after the Qatargate revelations and its arrest by the Belgian authorities.
