The Republic of Cyprus is a Member State of the International Maritime Organization and is elected to a very high position at the plenary meeting of the Organization, and there are no problems with the possible elections of Turku G.G. organismsaid the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.

In his statements during an event in Nicosia, when asked to comment on Greece’s support for Turkey to the General Secretariat of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and asked if he was aware of this, and whether there would be a problem with the participation of Cyprus, the President of the Republic said that “GUARANTEED VICTORY. The International Maritime Organization acts on the basis of the Charter of the Organization.”

Nikos Christodoulidis added that “The Republic of Cyprus is a member state that is actually elected to a very high position in the plenary of the Organization and there is no problem in the possible election of the Secretary General of Turkey.”

Noting that “elections will be held in June, nominations are still being made, Friday is the last day for nominations, between Greece and TurkeyIt is my understanding that this was agreed upon when Mr. Dendias went to Turkey regarding the earthquakes. The potential strengthening of relations between the two countries is something that we will also take advantage of. From that moment on, it becomes clear to everyone that the Republic of Cyprus cannot support Turkey’s candidacy just because Turkey does not allow ships flying the Cypriot flag to enter its ports. You understand that it would be impossible for us to support such a nomination.”
