Road torpedo race from Germany

Trying to overcome the obstacles created by the old legal dispute between Greek state and a company that supplies new heavy duty torpedoes (SeaHake Mod 4) For submarines of the Navy (PN) is in process Ministry of Defence.

Despite the fact that the contract for the supply of torpedoes was approved by Parliament a year ago, there are delays on the German side in connection with the expectation of a consensus settlement of all legal disputes between the company and the Greek state. These disputes relate to offenses that, according to competent sources, have expired, so the contract for the supply of torpedoes was concluded with the logic of the subsequent settlement of legal cases.

Litigation arose in the early 2000s over initial arrangements between the Greek state and German companies to build Type 214 submarines and modernize Type 209 submarines.

It should be noted that based on the design of P.N. torpedoes are due to begin shipping in June, and new workshops have long been set up at the Salamis Naval Base to support the new system, enhancing the comparative advantage that Project 214 submarines have under the Aegean Sea.

In addition to the existing legal problems (given that there is a statute of limitations for offenses, a possible judicial acquittal of the Greek state is considered almost impossible) there are concerns about some of the additional benefits that PN has received. with a torpedo contract, which, according to some circles in the Ministry of National Defense, may be called into question by the Germans, already discussing the possibility of extending the delivery of torpedoes.

Among them are some materials worth 6 million euros, as well as a 10% discount on the torpedo, which was provided by the German company Atlas Elektronik GmbH in the original contract. In addition, the contract included, without additional financial burden, materials critical to the supply system of the plant named after. P.N. and specifically for the armament and anti-submarine system of four Type 214 submarines and the upgraded Okeanos submarine.

To resolve the outstanding issue, new legislative regulation is required, which must be ratified by Parliament after the necessary legal steps have been taken. The ongoing pre-election period does not help advance such issues, but it seems that the postponement of elections to May leaves room for parliamentary work, which can be completed by the end of March or early April.
