Androulakis meeting with SPD chairman: “The ties between our parties are close”

Chairman of the SPD Lars Klingbeilthe president of the PASOK-Change movement met in his office in Parliament, Nikos Androulakis.

Welcoming the President of the SPD, Mr. Androulakis said that the meeting is taking place at a very difficult time for Greece after the incredible tragedy in Tempi, which claimed the lives of dozens of Greek citizens, mostly young people.

“A tragic moment for our country that highlights the lack of infrastructure, as well as meritocracy and transparency,” said N. Androulakis, adding that the PASOK Movement for Change’s bet on the way to national elections is to ensure “the strategic strengthening of the rule of law , democratic institutions and, of course, health care, education, in order to eliminate the great inequalities that arose after the great economic crisis, and also as a result of the energy crisis.

The President of PASOK-KINAL said in connection with the forthcoming EU summit that “it is worth recalling the book of the SPD President and former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt on an independent Europe.

“This is the vision of every pro-European democrat who wants us to live together in a spirit of solidarity, democracy and dignity. A self-sufficient Europe means a Europe with strong financial instruments that will create a strong competitive base and eliminate its dependence on third countries. A Europe that will continue institutional change, a Europe that will have a common foreign policy and a common defense policy to face the challenges that we have seen intensify in recent years. We must serve this Europe as European democrats and socialists,” he stressed.

He also emphasized that the SPD was the party of responsibility in difficult times, and therefore PASOK, in difficult times for the country, bore a high responsibility for the strong presence of Greece in the European Union.

“We are a historical party, a party that tried to change Greece through reforms, you know this very well, and we strive to continue doing this for many more years. We are a force for progress, change, a faction that serves democracy, institutions and human rights,” he said.

“I promised at our meeting a few months ago that I would come to Athens to express our support for your election campaign. It was very important for me to send a strong message here from Athens today that we are friends, we work closely with PASOK and we want a strong PASOK. Chancellor Olaf Soltz called me early in the morning and conveyed his wishes for a strong PASOK. He knows the close ties between our parties. One of the issues that will concern us is the tragic train accident. I express our support to the Greek people. It was an accident that shocked us. As Nikos mentioned, European integration is important. We need to take new steps in this direction.”
