According to Cairo, on Saturday Mevlut Cavusoglu will make the first official visit of a Turkish foreign minister to Egypt in a decade.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced on Friday the upcoming visit of the head of Turkish diplomacy in the context of reducing tensions between the Erdogan and Al-Sisi regimes in connection with the devastating earthquakes on May 6.her February.
According to the ministry in Cairo, Mr. Cavusoglu will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukri.
This will be the first visit by a member of the Turkish government in more than a decade and a return visit to Turkey three weeks after the earthquakes that killed more than 55,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
Mr. Cavusoglu then even spoke of opening a new page in Turkish-Egyptian relations, foreshadowing the official visit he is now preparing for on Saturday, just 19 days later.
Cairo’s relationship with Ankara has been frozen since Abdel Fattah al-Sisi came to power in Egypt in 2013 after the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi, an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
However, Turkey has been trying for months to normalize its relations with a number of regional powers such as Israel and Egypt.
Cairo sent humanitarian aid to Turkey after the earthquakes.
Recall that Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias also made a similar visit to Turkey with Mr. Sukri.
