Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis once again apologized for the Tempi train accident, taking responsibility for his government and emphasizing that “we cannot hide behind a series of human errors.”
Points of the Prime Minister’s proposal
- publicly apologize again on behalf of all those who have ruled in recent years, but also personally. I take responsibility.
- We can’t hide behind a string of human mistakes. If the remote control project had been completed, this accident would not have happened, and technology would have allowed us to prevent the unthinkable.
- This is no excuse for the project to be completed in a few months. We didn’t have time to install it before something bad happened.
- The last thing I care about is a confrontation about who is to blame. We are all to blame, and let’s courageously admit itfrom governments to administrations.
- The distribution of duties will be made by Justice quickly and to the highest degree.
- The tragedy happened, however, with us at the helm of the country.
- I can guarantee two things: 1) Absolute research transparency so that errors can be detected and fairly assessed, 2) Direction of urgent initiatives to improve the problematic situation on the railways in terms of technology and personnel.
- I listened to the dialogues in question from the night of the tragedy and felt anger And shame.
- Prime Minister announced framework of activities to support the relatives of the victims of the tragedyon an economic and moral level. Announcements will be made immediately.
- Mr. Mitsotakis repeated measures announced yesterday George Herapetritis:
- Two station masters per station
- In the short term, the transport project will be scaled down if necessary.
- Legal Framework for Disasters and Damage Tightens Immediately
- Currently recruiting staff
- “I will move heaven and earth to complete the remote control project. We will announce the schedule next week. It will be ready by the end of summer“.
- During a meeting with European representatives on the railway, the Prime Minister asked detailed train safety report with specific recommendations. As soon as the report is ready, it will be made public.
- We must not allow anger over the tragedy at Tempe to provoke a new split.
- Additional funding from the Recovery FundA: More funds than already allocated 270 million in the fixed orbit environment.
- The Prime Minister spoke of “the war against the dark state of anachronism that takes on different party colors but remains deep” and asked “to overthrow this troubled state, no matter how many obstacles we meet.”
- “Only in this way will the dramatic request “Never Again” turn into “Now or Never” the revival of the whole country. Our answer is now.
Measures to open the railway
It is noted that during today’s meeting, Minister of State and Minister of Transport Giorgos Gerapetritis will inform the Cabinet of Ministers about the tragedy of February 28 and measures to restore the safety of railway transport.
According to government sources, there will be no other items on the agenda.
Yesterday, at a press conference, Mr. Gerapetritis said that the railway will resume work, probably at the end of March. But until the delayed signaling and telemechanics systems are put in place, the routes will be more sparse, as will fewer stations where trains will stop, which will operate strictly with two stationmasters on all shifts.
This, he says, will also lead to a reduction in the transport project, which “means reducing trains or reducing the stations where the train will stop. We will see this with administrations and workers. There is no doubt that, firstly, without additional safety valves, not a single train will move, and secondly, this will be done with the absolute coordination of all departments.
Meanwhile, a leadership change at OSE and ERGOSE is inevitable, as the leaders of both organizations have resigned.
