His party itinerary Kostas Karamanlis begins many years ago, in 1974, when at the age of 18 he joined the newly formed Youth Party, ONNEDwhich had just been created by his order Konstantinou Karamanlisacting as youth manager for organizational and ideological issues from 1974 to 1979 and again from 1984 to 1989 when he first became a candidate for the parliament in Thessaloniki.

Seven years later, his candidacy for the leadership of the party would follow, a candidacy that received massive support from the party base, just as after the defeat of the ND in 1996. he was tormented by intense introversion and was looking for a new page.

The then 41-year-old Kostas Karamanlis was considered the ideal candidate to give a new state perspective New Democracy indeed, on March 21, 1997, at the 4th party congress, he was elected president of New Democracy with a percentage reaching 70%. Subsequently, an attempt began to return the New Republic to power.

It was almost impossible in 2000, but in 2004 ND emerged victorious with a 45.36% percentage, using the famous opening in the middle zone.

Kostas Karamanlis, having a very large political capital, won the next elections, in 2007, despite the fact that this was preceded by large fires in Ilya.

5.5 years that Kostas Karamanlis was prime minister were sealed veto in Bucharest and a diverse foreign policy, but also from intensive internal mobility at the level privatizationlike the Olympics.

In 2009, he decided to go to the polls ahead of schedule, talking about the upcoming economic crisis. It was rejected by a wide margin, and the post of prime minister passed to George Papandreou and to PASOK.

After premiership

In the next 14 years, Kostas Karamanlis supported his faction and all the leaders with his attitude. His intervention was measured, but whenever necessary, he declared himself “present”, as, for example, in the 2015 referendum.

However, he always made statements before the election battles of the New Democracy, and over the past three years he has delivered keynote speeches four times, mainly on national issues.

It remains to be seen if there will be continuity in his political career after the end of his parliamentary career, as he denies being interested in the presidency of the republic in 2025.
