Following a Feb. 15 meeting between the Prime Minister and representatives of artists and performing arts students, the government is beginning to address the long-term distortion that existed prior to PD85/2022 and has intensified over the course of the previous government by removing the chronic pay sharing of performing arts graduates in the state .

In this context, the competent Ministries of Finance, Interior and Culture and Sports jointly developed the KYA plan, which concerns the salary status of graduates of drama and dance schools in the state, regardless of the year of graduation (before or after 2003), and which establishes a rational and an equal way of remuneration for both those who provide artistic work and those who provide related work, such as art and education.

The key points of the proposed MIA are:

⦁ Formation of a special salary scale for artistic work (SE) with 19 salary scales (MS). MK1 monthly base salary is set at 1037 euros with the possibility of salary increases.
⦁ Inclusion in it of unregulated specialties of theatre, dance and cinema, as well as related educational specialties, which will allow curing long-standing problems in remuneration in artistic and pedagogical positions, especially in PTA. (We remind you that this does not apply to positions announced by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, as they have a separate qualification system.)
⦁ Equal treatment of wages for all graduates of theater and dance schools, regardless of the year of graduation. Thus, the multi-year request of the sector has been satisfied, the Gordian connection for twenty years has been eliminated, and the distortion that was consolidated in 2017 with the SYRIZA agreement has been corrected.

The proposed regulation aims to address the pathologies that have plagued the industry since 2003 and is a practical, ethical and substantive recognition of the work of artists working in the public sector. Two decades later, the current government proposes a solution to another problem of cultural figures.

This regulation should be added to a network of broader initiatives taken by the government to establish for the first time a national system of education in the performing arts and improve the quality of education in this area through the creation of a university level. The School of the Performing Arts in 2025, assessing those schools that remain ungraded, and making performing arts education accessible by providing academic opportunities for performing arts graduates who wish to pursue their studies.
