Greece-Bulgaria: key energy autonomy agreements

Two important agreements between Greece And Bulgariawhich, according to government sources, “further deepening the strategic energy cooperation between the two countries on the basis of solidarity and reciprocity,” were signed yesterday in Athens by the energy ministers of the two countries in the presence of the prime minister. Mrs Mitsotakis and President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev. The first concerns energy cooperation in the field of supply and storage of natural gas, and the second concerns the study of the possibility of building new oil pipeline that will connect the ports of Alexandroupolis and Burgas.

“European goal”

These agreements “consolidate our energy cooperation, being at the same time one more step towards the strategic goal of European autonomy. Therefore, their importance goes beyond bilateral borders, and I believe that this is becoming a political event that concerns the whole of Europe and at the same time establishes solidarity between its countries,” said Mr. Mitsotakis and, among other things, added: “From now on Further, Greek companies will be able to store natural gas at the Chiren facility in northwestern Bulgaria, and Bulgarian companies will be able to use Revitusa. Thus, both countries have guaranteed access to critical infrastructure for their energy security. With regard to oil and its release from Russian sources, we are committed to exploring the possibility of building a new oil pipeline that will connect the two hub ports: Alexandroupolis and Burgas, and through them the two seas, the Aegean and the Black Sea. It is a project that is being revived as the Alexandroupolis-Burgas pipeline, offering Bulgaria alternative sources of supply along with, of course, a safer, faster and cheaper way to transport fuel. Not only because it replaces the tankers that must pass through the Bosphorus, but also because it will add to other energy facilities already operating or under construction – I’m talking about the MGB, about the FSRU “Alexandroupolis”, about the new electrical connection of the new Santa to Marista “.

For his part, the president of the neighbor emphasized, among other things: “All this goes beyond the framework of a cross-border agreement. Greece and Bulgaria proved to be pillars of stability in the region. This cooperation is changing the map of South Eastern Europe, opening up new perspectives for the two countries.”

Mr. Radeff was welcomed by the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at the Acropolis Museum, where they had lunch. The two presidents were then invited to the exhibition “Clothing of the Soul”, which was curated by artists Vangelis Kiris from Greece and Anatoly Georgiev from Bulgaria.
