Cyprus: DISY rejects joint government with Christodoulidis

The vote on the choice in the second round of the presidential election was a decision taken Political Office of the Party of the Right – DISY– on Tuesday evening, it was emphasized that the party will be in opposition from the next day, no matter who is elected. The main argument on which this decision was based was that DISY could not, under any circumstances, reward its “destroyer”. Nikos Christodoulidesbut not to support a candidate who is supported by the Left party, Andreas Mavroyannis, as they share a lot, mainly in matters of economics and internal management. OUR Averof NeophytoHe announced an election conference for March 11, claiming the presidency of the party.

However, former foreign minister of the Anastasiades government, Nikos Christodoulidis, sent a letter to the president of DISY on Tuesday calling for the party to have a significant presence in government. He even stressed that they have common positions on both economic and foreign policy issues. Although DISY refrained from responding to Christodoulides’ letter, the latter was publicly supported by the right-wing SEK workers’ union. It is recalled that Nikos Christodoulidis comes from Democratic Anxiety, however he ran against party president Averof Neophytou and won a large part of the anxious voters. His move caused controversy, resulting in him being expelled from the party last January.

The President of the Republic supported the candidacy of Christodoulidis and the co-government with DISY Nikos Anastasiades. The move deepened the rift between him and DISY president Averof Neophytou. President Anastasiades intended to visit the Politburo, but after seeing the reaction of the leaders, he changed his mind. Instead, he agreed with the text prepared by the leadership for the extraordinary vote and with the decision to leave DISY in opposition. During the lengthy DISY Politburo meeting, there was a strong movement in favor of the candidacy of Andreas Mavroyiannis, while a small minority spoke of the need to support the candidacy of Christodoulides. In fact, there were preliminary judgments by Education Minister Prodromos Prodromos, who since Sunday supported the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis. However, DISY officials, who welcome the opportunity to personally vote for Mr. Mavroyiannis, are openly communicating with the candidate’s circle and asking to ensure that their chosen finance minister is not a leftist. In an attempt to win over right-wing voters who are worried about the possibility of an AKEL government, Mr. Mavroyiannis has decided to declare himself finance minister. As specified, he will not come from AKEL, but will have extensive experience in senior positions. Independent candidate Konstantinos Christofidis also endorsed Andreas Mavroyiannis on Tuesday evening.
