Voters went to the polls today to elect the politician who will succeed Nikos Anastasiadis as president. Republic of Cyprus.

Nikos Anastasiades, 76, is leaving with “mixed feelings,” he said today, after ten years in office (two terms) and a total of 43 years in politics, leaving the field open for a new president to come.

The polling stations closed at 18:00 and, according to exit polls, the next round will definitely pass in the presidential election (supported by the Democratic Party – WILDLY and other smaller parties of the so-called golden mean) Nikos Christodoulides. However, at the moment it is unclear who will be the second candidate to face him next Sunday. Despite a significant lead in pre-election polls, former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis failed to win the 50% + 1 vote that would have qualified him for the presidency in the first round.

The second round will take place next Sunday, 12 February.

Nikos Christodoulidis, although himself a member of DISY, entered the electoral battle as an independent, with the support of DIKO, EDEK, DIPA and Solidarity, against the candidacy of DISY President Averof Neophytou.

Recall that Nikos Christodoulides served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from March 1, 2018 to January 9, 2022.
