What Athens “sees” after Blinken’s meeting with Cavusoglu – Severe climate in Ankara

No outside planning Turkey for a hot episode he doesn’t “see” Athena at this stage, according to senior diplomatic sources, which, however, did not rule out a random event. This assessment at the highest diplomatic level was recorded shortly after the meeting in Washington between Foreign Ministers of the United States and Turkey but also taking into account his tour Anthony Blinken in her area Eastern Mediterraneanwith stops, including in Athens and Ankara.

A meeting of US and Turkish delegations took place in Athens State Department it is not perceived with dramatic tones from the point of view of the Greek-Turkish language. On the contrary, it is quite clear that the involvement in the US-Turkish relations is mainly related to the issue of Turkey’s accession to Sweden And her Finland in NATO. For this reason, and the questions that have arisen, such as the sale F-16 in Turkeydeadlines, despite the expressed will of the US government to continue.

The same senior diplomatic sources confirmed that “K” reported a few days ago on the visit of Mr. Blinken to Athens on 21 February, when the fourth strategic dialogue will take place and the 3+1 scheme (Greece, Israel, Cyprus and the USA) will meet.

The same sources note that Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri is expected to visit Athens in the near future, where cooperation with Hellas. However, the two countries are in complete coordination. In fact, a joint letter from Turkey and Libya to the UN regarding Greek investigations in the Eastern Mediterranean is expected to be responded to by Greece and Egypt in the same manner.

At the same time, at least based on what is discussed publicly, Turkey disappointed with Blinken-Cavusoglu meeting. Surprisingly, the Turkish delegation failed to even reach a possible date for the purchase and modernization of the F-16.

According to reportsthe Turkish side was already aware of the negative climate during the meeting of Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal with his American counterpart Victoria Nuland, where it was clearly stated that the US government had no objection to the F-16 issue. However, Turkish objections to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, disagreements between the two sides in Syria, and a Russian-brokered rapprochement with Assad are not contributing to climate change in Congress.

According to senior diplomatic sources, Turkey has no plans to provoke a heated escalation.

This is believed to be the reason why, immediately after meeting Mr. Blinken, Mr. Cavusoglu attacked Greece, emphasizing that it was militarizing the islands with American weapons systems, and criticized the presence of American bases in Greece. But his references to Bob Menendez also made an impression. Mr. Cavusoglu mentioned the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee six times during the 29-minute press conference.

The Turkish foreign minister, while arguing that the F-16 issue should not be linked to the Turkish veto over Sweden and Finland joining NATO, acknowledged that the US side had made it clear that the two countries’ entry would help overcome congressional objections.

The US Ambassador to Ankara, Jeffrey Flake, in an interview with Turkish journalists, referred to the meeting of the two foreign ministers and stressed that “I have worked with Senator Menendez both in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. He has serious concerns, which he expressed. But this has nothing to do with Sweden and Finland. I have to say that there is a general desire of Sweden and Finland.”

Meanwhile, Turkey’s major opposition newspaper Sözcü claims in an article that “the front against the sale of F-16s to Turkey is growing” and reports that “the Jewish lobby has begun to support the position of the Greek lobby in Congress.”
