Greek-Turkish: Fake news from Ankara

Turkish defense minister yesterday tried to turn into black and white Hulusi Akar in connection with the incident with the pursuit of his patrol boat Coast security from the Turkish coast, on Thursday morning, in the waters southeast of it Pharmacy, within Greek territorial waters. The incident occurred when a Coast Guard patrol boat attempted to search three Turkish fishing boats. During this period, bream fishing is carried out over a wider area, and it is not uncommon for Turkish fishing boats to enter, trying to get a larger share of the catch. According to the relevant Coast Guard statement, Greek patrol carwhen performing a recognition service from three Turkish fishing boats, a Turkish cruiser approached, which tried to ram it with dangerous maneuvers. According to the statement, the crew of the Greek vessel fired warning shots in a safe area and the Turkish vessel sailed towards the Turkish coast.

A few hours later, the Turkish side presented their version of events, claiming that the Greek vessel was chasing three fishing boats. And the Turkish Defense Minister raised the level of tension against our country, stating “serious problems with Greece.” He went on to present his side of the story: “We are working very hard to resolve them through dialogue. We have not received a positive response from Greece to any of our initiatives. Just yesterday they poisoned and shot our fishermen in the Aegean Sea. It is Greece that provokes day and night. They do what they do for internal political reasons. We do not leave unanswered any insult addressed to us. Despite what they have done, we are talking about solving problems through dialogue. We say, until the snow falls on the mountains, “come to your senses and stand on the ground with your feet.” We warned them and continue to warn them. “Stop your defiant behavior. We want to solve problems peacefully. Let’s talk.” Unfortunately, we see the problems from the other side. You have done this in history, the results are known.”

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar presented his version of events, stating that they “harassed and shot our fishermen in the Aegean.”

Thursday’s incident at Pharmakonisi adds to a string of similar incidents that occur from time to time in the Aegean. For example, in February last year, there was an incident with a Turkish fishing boat and a Coast Guard vessel northwest of Oinusa. A Greek Coast Guard vessel approached the fishing vessel, but the fishermen ignored the warning signals and left Greek waters. Then the fishing boat tried to ram the patrol boat, the port security opened fire. In early November, the Greek and Turkish coast guards arrived in Samos to take a break from the hot episode in the Aegean Sea.

As presented then by “K” on the occasion of the interrogation by the crew of the Turkish ship of the area of responsibility for the search and rescue of Greece, the officers of the two corps were at arm’s length from each other and with weapons in their hands, waiting for the order to apply, which in the end did not happen. According to “K”in their report to the Frontex headquarters in Warsaw, the Italians confirm that the incident took place in the Greek area of responsibility for search and rescue and within the area where the Frontex operation “Poseidon” is taking place.
