“We live in a world that is changing rapidly and unpredictably. Questions sometimes sound more convincing than the answers we have. However, this uncertainty gives rise to great opportunities, leaves room for inspiration and creativity, and at the same time establishes our responsibility to consolidate and pass on to the next generations a more just and inclusive society,” emphasized, among other things, the President of the Republic. , Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
2022 has become another year in a series of crises characteristic of our time. The pandemic has subsided thanks to science and collective efforts, and society is returning to normal. With sorrow for our brethren who have passed away, but at the same time with knowledge and readiness for the future and the dangers that await us.
The health emergency has been replaced by a war in Ukraine that has shifted the geopolitical balance. From the first moment, Greece expressed its undivided support to the Ukrainian people and, together with its partners, contributed to the defense of European values. The illegal Russian invasion not only grossly violates the sovereignty of an independent state. It is also causing a global food and energy crisis that will hit us hard in the difficult winter we are going through, especially vulnerable groups, households and businesses.
In this unstable environment, our country is a factor of stability and security in the Balkans and the South-Eastern Mediterranean. Demonstration of an unwavering commitment to international law and sober dialogue, as well as an unwavering attitude towards any revisionism that calls into question its sovereign rights. Our homeland has the potential to become a center of energy and development in the wider region by investing in the talents and extroversion of the Greeks. In tourism, education, digital services and the green transition, there are major challenges for the next day and Greece’s impact on the globalized community. Priority building a better and more efficient state, ensuring social mobility, combating inequality and the demographic problem.
Our progress and prosperity require the proper functioning of our institutions and the guarantee of our rights. Respect for the rule of law is fundamental to the enjoyment of liberty and equality, and to the quality of government. The deepening of democracy, the separation of powers and the protection of common interests protect citizens’ confidence in politics and its autonomy. This need is all the more pressing at a time when illiberal regimes are on the rise and totalitarian structures and practices prevail in many parts of the world.
We live in a world that is changing rapidly and unpredictably. Questions sometimes sound more convincing than the answers we have. But this uncertainty creates great opportunities, leaves room for inspiration and creativity, and at the same time establishes our responsibility to consolidate and pass on a more just and inclusive society to future generations.
Holidays are not only an occasion for summing up, plans and promises for the coming year. It is also a powerful reminder of the importance of a generous spirit and selfless concern for others. Especially those whom we have neglected and who need our support so that they do not remain invisible among us. The successive crises of recent years have tested us and taught us that our unity and cohesion are connected with solidarity and a deep awareness that, in addition to individuals, we are also members of a social whole. That our “I” includes others. Our hopes and prospects for tomorrow are based on this belief.
I hope 2023 brings health and happiness to everyone.”
