Parliament in the red before the elections

The highly conflicted climate that prevailed in parliament several times in the previous period, with typical confrontations between political leaders at a meeting in wiretapping and discussion about it budgetit is now expected to be consolidated by the resumption of the work of the national delegation in January and as the moment approaches when the pre-election period officially opens.

Both government as well as opposition they have already opened their papers in terms of their attitude in the context of parliamentary work, both at the legislative and other levels of the work of the national delegation. Significantly, it is mentioned Conference of Presidents and Committee on Institutions and Transparencymembers of which were called back in January to consider “hot” cases due to circumstances: a conference with the extension of the term of office of members of the Communications Privacy Authority and the National Radio and Television Council, while the Committee of Institutions, under pressure from the opposition, again with the question of listening to telephone conversations.

Both in relation to these “fronts” and in relation to the production of legislative work, the ruling majority planned and intends to continue the strategy of “attaching to institutions and promoting the necessary reforms.” On the other hand, the opposition not only constantly accuses the authorities of acting at the expense of institutions, but also expresses its disagreement with almost any bill that is put to a vote. In particular, the official opposition is now increasingly asserting that the government “does not have the political legitimacy to make decisions, especially now that the country is actually in the pre-election period.”

The Conference of Presidents will be busy in January with term extensions for ADAE and ESR members.

In this political-parliamentary environment, the blue majority prefers to create an image of stability and productivity. Characteristically, at the last meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, it was noted that following the results of a busy three-year work (398 draft laws were adopted), the plans for the new electoral year provide for an additional 111 legislative initiatives from 17 ministries: it is clear that the employees of Maximos Palace are trying to convey optimism that it will remain in their offices after the upcoming elections.

Plans for the near future include, first of all, two bills of a procedural nature – these are the sanctions of international conventions under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Ministry – for two days on January 11-12. In the legislative department of the parliament, only two bills are currently under consideration, also of a procedural nature: these are the sanctions of the State Account and the Balance Sheet and other financial reports of the central administration for the 2021 financial year.

Bills for: A) Multi-level governance and risk management in the public sector have their turn for submission and voting. B) Donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells. c) New immigration code. D) Reformation of the “pothen esches” institution, as “K” wrote on Sunday.

In the process of public discussion, until today, the first and until January 6, the second, are the bills “Care for the personnel of the Armed Forces”, “On the rationalization of the legislation of the Armed Forces”, “Organization of the National Guard” and other provisions and “Establishment of the National Organization for the Investigation of Aviation and railway accidents and transport safety.
