USR Sen. Christy Berea reports that he has proposed an amendment to the 2023 State Appropriations Act that would supplement the Department of the Interior’s budget for the purchase of Tasers for police officers.
Christy Berea explained that for the security of a civilized state, it is necessary to have a sufficient supply of law enforcement agencies so that the police are no longer surprised or caught off guard by those who attack them, writes News.ro.
“For some time we have seen cases where the police are caught off guard. Hence our dissatisfaction with the police. I proposed an amendment to the budget law to solve this problem, namely that the Romanian police should be equipped with stun guns. These are Tasers, which are non-lethal weapons, but they are extremely effective. The US or European police officers have such weapons,” said the UDR senator.
He noted that the amount proposed to replenish the budget of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is 500,000 lei.
“This is not an amount that the Romanian state cannot take on. If law enforcement agencies had such equipment, we would no longer see situations where the police are threatened by those who break the law,” said Christy Berea.
The UDR deputy noted that the amendment was voted in the defense committees, and if it is approved at the plenary session, law enforcement officers will be able to arm themselves with such weapons as early as next year.
