Member of the European Parliament Yevhen Tomak claims that the negative vote on Romania’s accession to Schengen is the “biggest humiliation” for our country as an EU state. “We didn’t deserve this cynical lesson, but we shouldn’t resign either,” he wrote on Facebook.
Romania’s accession to Schengen was blocked by Austria, which voted against it. The Netherlands, which opposed the integration of Bulgaria, also voted against, as the vote on the two countries was “in a package”.
What Evgeny Tomak says:
-
“Today it is clearly demonstrated that in the European Union, even those who give us lessons of loyalty to European values can break the rules.
-
This is the biggest humiliation that we have suffered as a member of the European Union.Perhaps now the parliament, the government and, obviously, the president of Romania will understand that relations with the European Union are not limited only to subsidies and the right to work in other countries.
-
Counting in Europe means making European politics, not sitting at the door and waiting for others to decide for you. Personally, I feel guilty, even though I and most of my colleagues in the European Parliament, regardless of the party they come from, have worked hard to succeed; as a result, all Schengen measures were voted.
-
We didn’t deserve this cynical lesson, but we don’t need to resign either.
-
Today’s decision hurts and is undeserved. But our place in the European Union, our place in Schengen, and we will succeed.”
