“PSD believes that in the context in which the DNA opened a criminal investigation and ordered the detention of Mr. Niculae Badalau, he can no longer continue his activities in the Court of Accounts of Romania. His presence in this position will seriously affect the credibility of the institution. Therefore, his resignation would be the best way to protect the image of the fundamental institution of the Romanian state,” reads the PSD press release.

The Vice-President of the Chamber of Accounts, Nikulae Badelau, was detained on Sunday for 24 hours by DNA prosecutors in the case of continuous bribery and abuse of influence. DNA prosecutors say Badelau allegedly promised 170,000 euros to the mayor of the commune to offer the contract to a company run by his relative. Together with Badelau, a representative of the company was arrested for the crime of complicity in bribery.

Nikulae Badelau was a PSD senator from Giurgiu and president of PSD Giurgiu and from 2018 to 2019 he was the Minister of Economy and in 2019 former Prime Minister Viorika DenĨila offered him the role of Minister of Energy. On June 30, 2020, the parliament, at the PSD’s proposal, recommended Nikulai Bedalau and Ilie Sarba for the positions of vice presidents.
