Greece-Egypt: Importance of MoU for Search and Rescue

The Memorandum of Understanding they signed is considered especially important Hellas as well as Egypt yesterday in Cairo and concerns cooperation between the two countries in the field of aviation and maritime search and rescue services. As the Minister of National Defense N. Panagiotopoulossigning a memorandum with his Egyptian counterpart M. Zaki, in the presence of foreign ministers N. Dendia and S. Sukri, “the agreement defines the limits of jurisdiction and areas of responsibility of search and rescue operations between Greece and Egypt, which are identified with Athens and Cairo FIR respectively.” As is well known, Turkey disputes the borders of the Athens FIR, while the maritime zone agreed yesterday covers the territory defined by the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum. The signed agreement is “as opposed to the so-called ‘memorandums of cooperation’ between Turkey and the government of Tripoli, which are illegal, criminal, invalid and destabilizing actions,” Mr. Panagiotopoulos added.

“This agreement is based on a commitment to international law, including the law of the sea, and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations in order to uphold international legitimacy and promote peace and stability in the Mediterranean and beyond,” said Mr. Dendias, while also noting that the events in Libya and the ongoing Turkish provocation were discussed at a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart.

The jurisdictional boundaries are identical to the FIR of Athens, disputed by Turkey, and Cairo, respectively, while the agreed maritime zone covers the territory defined by the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum.

During the broadcast, Mr. Soukri said, among other things, that “the cooperation between the two countries is based on respect for international law”, and Mr. Zaki noted that relations between Greece and Egypt “should be a model for all relations between countries. They are based on respect and good neighborly relations.”

In the context of yesterday’s meetings, Deputy Foreign Minister Milt signed a bilateral agreement to hire 5,000 seasonal farmers. Varvitsiotis with his Egyptian colleague in European affairs.

At the same time, Georgia Meloni’s statements made a splash. The new Italian prime minister said she agreed with the recent statement by the country’s foreign minister, Anta. Tajani that the Greek islands of the Aegean belong, of course, to Greek sovereignty, and at the same time, she expressed her wish to meet Mr. Mitsotakis soon and for cooperation between Italy and Greece in matters of immigration and refugees.
