“Romania is on the right track for joining the Schengen zone. Today, the draft resolution on the accession of our country to the free movement zone was presented to the Working Group on Schengen issues. The presented document (attached) acknowledges that Romania has been meeting all the special Schengen criteria for a very long time. The Netherlands seems to have remained isolated and the only country that still expresses reluctance,” PSD MEP Victor Negrescu said on his Facebook page.

The MEP claims that during the informal discussions, the idea of ”additional references in the decision or annex to the letter signed by several member states, which would provide conditionality in the form of a specific monitoring mechanism” emerged.

“Most comments were about Bulgaria. Croatia’s accession document contains different provisions than those of Romania and Bulgaria. At the moment, the resolution does not have a specific date for joining Schengen, it will be decided later, most likely in the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs, Negrescu also says.

The Romanian MEP says that in the coming days he will personally contact the most influential Dutch parliamentarians to convince them to support Romania.
