
The Minister of the Environment and Energy mentioned the importance of the new GREGY electricity grid, which will connect Europe’s electricity systems to Africa via Greece to transmit 100% green energy. Kostas Skrekasspeaking at the conference today United States per Changing of the climate (COP27), which takes place in Egypt.
“This is a project of international energy and environmental importance worth 3.6 billion euros with the possibility of transmitting 3,000 MW of clean energy. Greece will benefit greatly from the construction of the cable, since part of the transmitted green energy will be consumed in our country, which will reduce energy costs for Greek consumers,” he emphasized and added: “We are investing in turning Greece into a green energy hub and helping to strengthen the security of Europe in this region. The governments of Greece and Egypt strongly support the project, having also signed the relevant Memorandum of Cooperation dated October 2021.”
The Minister of Environment and Energy also referred to Greece’s initiatives to phase out fossil fuels, noting that “Greece is a pioneer in developments in this area and is among the top performing Member States in the implementation of new renewable energy projects. We are accelerating the green transition and implementing numerous infrastructure projects that bring us one step closer to the goal of climate neutrality.”
