Government spokesman launches violent attack on SYRIZA Yannis Oikonomou during the political editors’ briefing, suggesting supportive measures taken by the government, as well as responding to SYRIZA’s complaints about the auctions.
“As you know, from the very beginning of the energy crisis, the government has been working and cooperating with our partners, seeking to formulate a pan-European political response to energy accuracy. Important proposals by the prime minister, such as limiting natural gas prices and joint supplies, are already on the negotiating table. An ally in this effort is the fact that markets, acknowledging the prospect of a pan-European reaction, have already begun to cut natural gas prices.
At the same time, the government continues to intervene both to support society with a number of measures, and to implement a national plan to reduce the burden caused by a surge in electricity prices. The mechanism for the immediate recovery of “surplus revenues” of electricity producers and their return to society has already brought in more than 2.5 billion euros, while it has already been adopted by Europe and is being implemented in several member countries.
In the meantime, legislation has been drafted, which will be submitted to Parliament for a new mechanism for recovering surpluses when and if they occur in the supply sector. In any case, the government is determined not to allow anyone to profit at the expense of citizens,” he stressed.
“At the same time, energy conservation remains a key priority. Greece aims to cut energy consumption during peak hours by at least 5% in the coming months. To this end, the electricity subsidy in November will also be phased and tied to electricity savings,” added Mr. Economou.
He went on to specifically refer to subsidies, stating:
“- With a monthly consumption of up to 500 kWh, that is, for 90% of households, the subsidy will be 238 euros per MWh.
– For a monthly consumption of 501-1000 kWh, the subsidy is 188 euros per MWh. However, if a household reduces the average daily consumption by 15% compared to the previous year, the subsidy is increased by 50 euros per MWh.
– For monthly consumption over 1001 kWh, i.e. for 2% of households, the subsidy is 98 euros per MWh. And in this scale, an additional subsidy of 50 euros per MWh is applied with a consumption reduction of 15%.
– For households included in the Social Household Tariff, the subsidy is 286 euros per MWh, which absorbs almost 100% of the increase.
— Concerning the electricity subsidy in professional tariffs
– For commercial customers up to 35 kVA and consumption up to 2000 kWh, the subsidy for November is 200 euros per MWh.
– For professional and commercial consumers up to 35 kVA that exceed 2000 kWh, as well as for all other non-residential low, medium and high voltage tariffs, the subsidy is 50 euros per MWh.
– For farmers, the subsidy is horizontal and amounts to 238 euros per MWh.
— On subsidies for natural gas at tariffs for the population
DEPA Emporias, in collaboration with other suppliers, will provide a horizontal subsidy of €25 per thermal MWh for all residential customers. This measure applies to 700,000 households regardless of income, size of residence or provider.”
The government spokesman then referred to what he said was a more deeply political issue that would be of increasing concern to us as we approach the elections. “SYRIZA, having failed in politics, is trying to rely on morality, the favorite mechanism of propagandists in their attempt to disorient people. However, we must not forget that ethics and morality are two completely different things that we always find in different people and never in the same character,” said Mr. Economou.
He referred to the period of SYRIZA and noted that “our country at that time became a pariah country in the EU and lost most of its national capital in the international arena. After the 2019 elections, the political decline of SYRIZA continued and intensified.”
As he pointed out, the current government “succeeded under pressure to reorganize the NHS and cope with the pandemic that broke out in 2020, supporting both society and business. Our government has been successful in dealing with a controlled migrant invasion of Evros and in resolving refugee and immigration issues on the island of Greece. Counter the escalation of Turkish aggression with a plan to modernize the Greek military, defensive alliances with world powers, and vigorous diplomacy that restored the country’s international prestige and power around the world. Our government has also revived the Greek economy, which even today achieves high growth rates, despite huge international crises that are forcing even traditional superpowers to buckle.”
Mr. Economou spoke about the achievements of the Greek government in terms of a large support program, tax cuts and unemployment, and an increase in the minimum wage. “Greece is going through a global hurricane of crises because the government is acting with a plan, with skill, with professionalism and political humanism,” he said.
He also acknowledged that mistakes are made and some setbacks are recorded, but “this is the inevitable fate of those who try, those who dare, those who act,” he added, highlighting the differences with SYRIZA in how such issues are handled. “ND moves in the light because he is not afraid of it,” he said characteristically.
“We respond to lies and slander with deeds and actions that benefit the country and the Greek people. For those who are unable to produce policy, to respond to the needs of society and the expectations of citizens, there is no other way but to constantly fluctuate between morality and scandal. This will be their tactic from today until the election. We will continue our fight selflessly, with humility, with respect for the citizen, correcting our weaknesses and mistakes, which are inevitable for anyone who acts and tries to change something,” Mr. Economou also noted.
“The ravens that SYRIZA speaks of today were obviously pigeons in 18 and 19.”
In conclusion, he touched upon the issue of auctions, describing it as important and particularly sensitive. In fact, he gave data on the number of completed auctions in 2018 (17,125), 2019 (18,421), highlighting that in 2020 and 2021 auctions were about 10,000 per year, and about 30,000 in 2022. Of these, about a third is in residential buildings. “Thus it is proved that auctions and auctions of houses were held respectively during the reign of SYRIZA, that is, the ravens that SYRIZA speaks of today were obviously pigeons in 18 and 19 years. We should also note that the vast majority of these auctions are not for homes, as our government has gone to great lengths to protect the first home and vulnerable borrowers,” he stressed. He also spoke about the implementation of the “Hercules” program, which deals with the problem of problem loans.
