Commission on foreign affairs Peter Stano after today’s announcement of the signing of a “memorandum of cooperation” between the two countries and stresses the need to avoid “actions that could undermine regional stability.”
In particular, Mr. Stano notes that “the European Union notes reports that Turkey and Libya’s Government of National Accord have signed a hydrocarbon agreement based on the 2019 Turkish-Libyan Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of areas of maritime jurisdiction in the Mediterranean.”
“The EU recalls that its position on this Memorandum was made clear by the European Council in December 2019 and remains unchanged: 2019 Turkish-Libyan MoU violates sovereign rights of third statesdoes not comply with the law of the sea and cannot have legal consequences for third states,” he adds.
Finally, he states that “the new agreement has not yet been made public. Further clarification is required regarding its content. Actions that could undermine regional stability should be avoided.”
