“Joint” presence of Mr. Mitsotakis and Erdogan in Prague

October 6, its first day informal European Council his meeting is planned in Prague European Political Community (ECC)this old common idea, which was revived last May by the President of France Emmanuel Macronin Europe’s attempt to gain a foothold in its immediate geopolitical neighbors to the north and east.

Yesterday the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis I was in Paris, where, among other things, very serious regional events and the Ukrainian issue were discussed. Although competent sources emphasize that invitations to participate in the YPC meeting in Prague have not yet been sent out, it is clear that the three most important countries in this endeavor are Turkey, the United Kingdom and Ukraine (Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland).

The first two upgraded F-16 Vipers were delivered yesterday by ODA and Lockheed Martin to the Air Force. By the end of the year, it is expected that the F-16 Viper, which is being tested in the United States, will return to Greece, as well as 4-6 more fighters.

In this context, since the meeting is taking place in the above format (i.e. 27+17), it becomes clear that Mr. Mitsotakis and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan they will be in the same place in Prague as the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.

Other than Mr. Mitsotakis’s general position that he is available to meet Mr. Erdogan at any time from the TIF stage, there is nothing so far.

However, the backstory of the EPC itself is rich, as it started as an idea to elevate leader Macron’s status at the European level, but risks turning into yet another nerve-wracking EU initiative. For Mr Macron, the EPC is a way to reinforce the European “special weight” and also an arm of cooperation with the United Kingdom.

After all, Paris was looking for a formula for London to remain in close cooperation with the EU. in matters of defense and security, despite the obvious difficulties.

According to some reports, in the contacts between France and Germany to promote the YPC from Berlin, it was stated that such a scheme is unthinkable without Turkey. For this reason, it was chosen to invite all countries that received the status of a candidate country, so Turkey could not be excluded. However, a source familiar with the talks told K that the “27+17” order schemes are so general in nature that they can hardly work with preliminary exceptions. However, while the EPC scheme is in operation, it is planned to hold one session every six months or, more likely, a year, with the responsibility for organizing the EU Presidency.

At the same time, Athens notes that the prolongation of the war in Ukraine has created pressure both in Paris and Ankara – of course, from a different starting point – in order to find functional channels of communication between France and Turkey.
