TEF: Six ‘keys’ defining a set of measures

There are a few days left before the opening of her “package”. TEF“, which will be announced next Saturday by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Government officials insist that no measures are fixed and much will depend on events next week, which are few and far between.

The prime minister and the economic staff want to have as clear a picture as possible of both the potential of the Greek economy and international developments regarding energy costs and inflation before making announcements.

According to government sources cited by APE-MPE, Kyriakos Mitsotakis wants to get the best possible impression of the big picture, and for this reason, the “TEF package” can be completed even hours before. As Finance Minister Christos Staikouras has repeatedly stated, there are a number of full-value proposals on the table, from which the Prime Minister will choose based on the priorities he has set, as well as the potential of the Greek economy.

Here are six key points that will define the “TIF package”.

  1. Next Wednesday, September 7, ELSTAT will announce the growth rate for the 2nd quarter of 2022. All estimates agree that it will be particularly high, proportionally, and thus confirms the GDP growth forecast for Greece in 2022. one of the highest in the Eurozone, relying mainly on tourism.
  2. Two days later, on Friday, September 9, there will be reports, also from ELSTAT, about the inflation rate, which, except for a shocking outlook, will slow down for the second month in a row. Eurostat has already prepared us for this by declaring lower inflation for August than in July. It should be noted that Greece is one of the few countries in the Eurozone that seem to be slowing down the “monster” of inflation.
  3. Within a week, the Ministry of Finance will have a clear idea of the course of state revenues in the month of August. The first information indicates that in the month under review, the tendency to exceed the target was maintained, which expanded the already created fiscal space.
  4. Tourism efficiency is a key decision-making factor. Everything suggests that the record of 2019 with revenue of 18.2 billion can be broken and the bar set higher. There will be a clearer picture in the government apparatus next week with the integration of August data, which is undoubtedly very positive, at least according to existing estimates.
  5. Next Thursday, September 8, the ECB’s Governing Council will meet to make decisive decisions on how to curb inflation. All indications converge on a rate increase of 0.50-0.75%, depending on how loud the message of the Central Bank will be.
  6. Finally, within a week, the roadmap for interventions against energy accuracy is expected to be refined, and the Commission, as always, is determined to put an end to this out-of-control price frenzy.

All of the above will create an environment in which the Prime Minister will move, always, as he stated, guided by the recognition that “resources are not inexhaustible.”

Economy: cheaper transportation on the table

Increase heating allowancebut also the expansion of the perimeter of the grant, said a government spokesman Yannis Oikonomouhowever, he confirmed that a plan to reduce the cost of transportation is being considered, and that the relevant ministries are working on ideas that go beyond the usual ones to support citizens.

Recall that, as they wrote cathimerini.gr as well as moneyreview.gr, measures to increase the use of public transport, in line with similar actions by other countries such as Germany, should be included in the package to be announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at TIF.

Speaking on SKAI TV and when asked if a “German” plan to reduce media ticket prices is on the table, Mr. Economou replied that this particular measure is also one of those that the government is considering, that don’t stop at conclusions or normal movements.

A government spokesman said that the measure in question concerns the daily life of citizens, movement, saving resources and energy of vehicles. “Competent ministries will use all available opportunities,” he added.

At the same time, Mr. Economou assured that measures to support the energy crisis would be continued. “We have horizontal measures for electricity, Fuel Pass 2 applies for fuel, we’ll see how we solve problems there, and for the heating quota we have more money and an extended perimeter every year, and this year will not be an exception. We have proven that we understand and respond to the demands and needs of the world,” Mr. Oikonomou said.

The TIF package also includes cheap transport tickets.

How did they write it? cathimerini.gr as well as moneyreview.gron the “table” are two proposals for transportation:

  • The first concerns the creation of an unlimited travel package for a limited time, similar to the one implemented for three summer months in Germany, when they gave monthly cards for buses, subways, trams and suburban trains costing only 9 euros.
  • The second proposal is more targeted, as it provides free cards with unlimited travel for young people under 29, since, like last year, the government intends to announce a separate package of measures for this age group. .

The final decisions will be taken next week, when the overall package of measures announced by the Prime Minister in his speech on Saturday, September 10, will be “locked in”.
