Estonia approves new military aid package for Ukraine

Estonia will provide Ukraine with additional weapons to counter Russian aggression, including mortars and anti-tank weapons. This decision was taken by the government in Tallinn at a meeting on Thursday, August 18th.

“Fighting in Ukraine remains intense and although Ukraine is receiving more and more Western weapons, we are morally obligated to support Ukraine. Ukrainians are fighting for our common values and if we have weapons to give them, we need to. ,” – said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur. He did not specify which models of weapons the Ukrainian military would receive and in what quantity.

In addition to armaments, Estonia plans to support the training of the Ukrainian armed forces, initiated by the UK, and in cooperation with Germany, will transfer another field hospital to Ukraine.

Since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in late February, Estonia has provided Kyiv with nearly 250 million euros in military aid, according to the government. Among the weapons already delivered are the Javelin portable anti-tank missile systems, manufactured in the United States. Ukraine also received several howitzers from old GDR stockpiles from Tallinn, the transfer of which was approved by the German government. In addition, Estonia and Germany provided Ukraine with a field hospital, created in a joint initiative.
