In Russia, to participate in the war in Ukraine, they began to recruit suspects and defendants who are in prison. The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 17, by Olga Romanova, a human rights activist and founder of the Rus Seated Foundation. According to her, criminal proceedings are suspended.
The existence of such a practice was confirmed to the publication “Caution, news” by the founder of the Gulagu.net human rights project Vladimir Osechkin. He said the project hotline received information about similar cases in Moscow and the region, St. Petersburg, Ryazan, Tver and Bryansk.
In early July, reports began to appear in the media that the Russian private military company (PMC) Wagner was recruiting prisoners in Russian colonies. In mid-August, representatives of PMCs visited 21 Russian colonies in 13 regions of the country, according to estimates by the publication Nestka and the Rus Sitting Foundation. As DW Romanova reported, businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is associated with PMC Wagner, went personally to agitate the colony’s prisoners.
