Unfortunately,TVR Cultural he did not fulfill, or rather could not fulfill my desire, expressed before the holiday, when I commented on the last films of the Kiesliowski series, to transfer and Decalogue. The broadcast of which in the early 90s, at a time when Romanians were rediscovering religion and the church and when Romanian television itself needed forgiveness, went down in history. However, SRTV’s financial situation is now dire, primarily due to the uninspired, megalomaniacal, out-of-touch leadership of CEO Dan Cristian Turturic, and the Romanian Parliament irresponsibly postponing the debate on CA’s ongoing reports.
However, the post remains interesting, some of his proposals in the field of film production are worthy of praise.
They also appreciate the attention to Polish cinema of the last years of communism and the 30 or more years of post-communism.
Corpus Christi, directed by Jan Komas and written by Mateusz Pacewicz, scheduled last week, is a relatively recent production. It was released in 2019 and was nominated Oscar (award for the best foreign film in 2020), also received other nominations and even awards.
Corpus Christi covers several topics. First, about the contradiction between appearance and essence. Daniel, the main character of the film, once committed a crime. He has other sins on his account. Because of which he was sent to a correctional facility. Basically, he would be what is called a bad person. However, he became a close friend of the priest Tomas, was promoted to the office of cantor, helped the man of the Church in sending the service. He understands more than others from sermons. Listen carefully to the sermon in which Father Tomas says that all believers are priests of God. But this does not mean that he would find the right way. He participates in the violence that is perpetrated every day by those with whom he is incarcerated. Stands on guard when a fight starts, uses drugs. However, the priest thought to give Daniel a chance. He recommended and supported his release on the condition that he would work at the sawmill for a certain time.
On his way out, Danylo steals a priest’s robe from his benefactor. He uses it at a party. This is admirable. And, having arrived at the destination, stimulated a misunderstanding, claims to be a servant of God. He is a Christian, it seems, and also a believer, so why shouldn’t he also, as he heard from Father Tomas, be a priest? Father Tomasz is recommended not by chance. Therefore, it deprives him of his identity as a benefactor. But is it about theft in law? Is it also about something else?
As a priest, he is introduced to an alcoholic village shepherd. So he gets an offer to hold his place for a while. Daniel gets more and more used to his new role, accepts it, is accepted by the community, his sermons have meaning, they also have courage. Danylo is charismatic, he feels great as a preacher of goodness and reconciliation. Which the mentioned community needs, because until that moment it was unable to overcome the trauma. A strange road accident with many victims, in which the driver’s wife is blamed. A false priest succeeds in what the one he replaced failed or lacked the courage to do. It brings truth, it brings reconciliation.
The second theme of Jan Komasa’s film is forgiveness. One that could not be more important to Roman Catholic doctrine. However, in the village of which the sinner Daniel became the shepherd, it seems that no one really wants forgiveness. The driver’s widow is excluded, she does not have free access to the service, she could not give her husband a Christian burial. His fiercest judge turns out to be the same woman who helps the false priest fulfill his duties. She is the mother of the girl with whom Daniel is in love. The one who should be the first to apologize is most vehemently opposed to the traditional burial of the driver and sends his widow harsh, offensive letters. One of the most striking scenes in the film is the one in which the fake priest confronts his parishioners by throwing in their faces offensive letters sent to a poor widow. Who is sinless in that village? Who would have the right to the stone. – Read the entire article and comment on contributors.ro
