Like the tragedy of the “Collective”, the terrible image of homes for the elderly is a mirror in which modern Romania can contemplate itself. This is Romania of cruelty, cowardice and gluttony. This is Romania, where human dignity is only a constitutional provision, while the reality of its days is shaped by brutal social Darwinism. Vulgarity, demagoguery and hypocrisy suffocate the public space. From propaganda television to the digital medium, contempt reigns.

The case of shelters that have become death traps shows the modus operandi of this official Romania. Politics and business are intertwined here under the sign of corruption and clientelism. Possessions under the care of local lords, as, for example, in Ilfov, are territories where the rule of law is suspended. The rule of law is replaced by arbitrariness. Power is placed at the service of a terrible will to exploit.

Nursing homes are the story of a nation for which human life has ceased to have any meaning beyond demagoguery and statistical benchmarks. The Romanian state is being taken over by those who deliberately and immorally establish the order of kleptocracy. The cover of kitsch Christianity and blatant socialism, so present in Ilfov, where the couple Pandele – Firea is the embodiment of moral and political pathology, serves to cover the despicable and inhuman actions of some tentacled criminal groups.

The tragedy at the Ilfov asylum marked the end of the road politically, at least temporarily, for Gabriela Firea. The resignation from the ministry and removal from the leadership of the PSD organization are signs of a spectacular decline. The pedestal, honed for years, is empty, and the statue of his majesty shows the material from which it is made.

For Pentriou Marcel Čolaku, the tragedy was an opportunity to develop, not without skill, the vocation of the defender of the suffering person. The PSD president intervened where the Romanian president hesitated so many times. Gabriela Firea’s resignation is not an act of withdrawal, but a formula that hides dismissal. For Marcel Čolaku, the removal of Gabriela Firea is a step towards strengthening his authority. The prospect of a candidacy for the capital’s mayor’s office has probably been removed for good.

What lies beyond this plan of political gestures? Just everyday life in this Romania, full of cruelty and greed. The reform of the state, which is often mentioned, but never realized, will mean, first of all, the organization of those management mechanisms that will give citizens the dignity stolen from them. Only a state that frees itself from the patronage of clientelism can be capable of proper administration. But the birth of such a state is impossible as long as political parties are only anti-meritocratic parasitic networks. Marcel Cholak’s oratory cannot hide a confirmed historical fact. The PSD is the architect and beneficiary of this regime of complicity and pervasive corruption.
