At the end of the book The fall of France. The Nazi invasion of 1940printed in Great Britain in 2003, translated by Mina Deku and published in Romanian by a relatively new publisher Publisol, (Bucharest, 2022), the historian Julian Jackson lists a number of French literary works that relate to or are inspired by the black event that occurred on June 14, 1940 (the fall of Paris) and then, on June 22, 1940, the signing of the infamous armistice. There are not many names – Ways of freedom Jean-Paul Sartre, Flanders road Claude Simon and Balcony in the forest Julien Hrac.

Even the films that the Hexagon cinema dedicated to this event are not as many as we expected. If Julian Jackson is to be believed, there would only be a movie forbidden games directed by René Clément, which tells about the fate of a little girl who lost her parents while running away. A moment that was like a godsend for popular goodwill, which the Vichy government enjoyed for a while.

The explanation, which the British historian considers possible, is that after the fall of Paris and the armistice, much more tragic events took place. “Heartbreaking experiences” — occupation, collaborationism, deportation, which “pushed the defeat into the background.”

Coincidentally, the novel-report was republished in Romanian at about the same time AthThis ispThis isthis is the Palace journalist R.G. Valdek. She came to Bucharest and stayed in the aforementioned hotel precisely in the summer of 1940, when “Paris fell.” That summer of 1940, RG Waldeck continues, “The Palace of the Athenaeum was the last cosmopolitan stage on which post-World War Europe and New Order Europe appeared together.” In that hotel, where officers of all nations and kinds, journalists or pseudo-journalists, spies, etc., lived, the news of the fall of Paris was received with great excitement. And this even if France had already begun to lose its legend and aura, according to which everything would be done and undone in the capital and its language.

Even more shocking is the fact that the subject of the fall of France was not one of the most common, even by French historians. The role of researching and commenting on it, as far as possible without political or sentimental overtones, would return, the author of the book trusts us, to English-speaking historians, be they American or British.

The book was published by the publishing house in Romanian translation Publisol this in itself is an argument that comes to support his claim. The Romanian edition is accompanied by a very useful saying Preface thanks to Adrian Choroyan. Relatively oddly inserted into the economy of the edition, after thanking the author, after List of cards and after A brief chronology.
