The number of COVID-19 cases registered in Romania is on the rise, similar to what is happening in other European countries, but there is currently no cause for concern as most cases are mild, says the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila.

“There is an increase in cases of COVID-19. If we look at the number of cases, there is a certain tendency to increase. And today there were about 700 cases at the national level. This is a trend that can be observed in all European countries. We are not in a different situation. We can’t talk about concerns, especially since it doesn’t affect hospitalized cases. If this effect increases and most forms are mild, for which isolation at home is sufficient, we have no reason to worry. For the circulating strains, including the new variants that were discovered in Europe (…) there is no indication that these cases are more serious or that they pose special problems compared to the strains that have been circulating so far,” Alexandru Rafila said on Tuesday in the parliament, reports Agerpres.

The Minister of Health recommends anti-COVID immunization with a vaccine adapted to the new strains to people with chronic diseases and people over 65 years old: “Given that a vaccine with a new formula, which also includes the Omicron – BA4 strain, is available in Romania, BA5 – this is the most modern vaccine that I have taken (…). My advice is that people over the age of 65 and anyone with chronic conditions in which a viral infection generally also refers to the flu can develop more seriously to access family doctors or vaccination centers that we have in our orders At the moment, both the ministry and the Institute of Public Health have a campaign that will be carried out so that everyone has the right information and makes a responsible decision, because everyone believes that it is good to protect their health.”

About 6 million doses of expired vaccine remain in warehouses from previous orders, stated the Minister of Health: “The warehouses are filled with old vaccine that could no longer be used, could not be sold. About 6 million doses of vaccine that we had in the first half of this year have expired as a result of orders placed in 2021.”
