Steve Harwell, the lead singer of the American group Smash Mouth, has died at the age of 56, BBC.com reports, Agerpres reports.
The band’s manager previously said Harwell was in end-stage liver failure and receiving palliative care at home.
In a statement, Robert Hayes said the singer died at his home in Idaho “surrounded by family and friends.”
Smash Mouth had a string of hits in the 1990s and 2000s, notable for “All Star”, “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “I’m a Believer”.
In 2021, Harwell left the band due to physical and mental health issues.
The musician, who struggled with alcoholism, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2013 and later with a neurological condition that affected his memory and speech.
However, the final decision to leave Smash Mouth came after he appeared drunk at a show in upstate New York, where he was filmed slurring words and shouting at the audience.
On September 3, Robert Hayes confirmed to the American media that the singer had very little left to live and was being cared for by his fiancée.
Born in California in 1967, Harwell began his musical career in the rap group FOS (Freedom of Speech).
