The head of the Romanian delegation at Eurovision 2023, Mihai Predescu, gave an explanation to the TVR board of directors after Teodor Andrej, who won the national selection with the song “DGT (Off and on)”, did not receive a single point in Liverpool, the worst result in history. reports Libertatea.

More than two weeks after the end of Eurovision 2023, ESC 2023 project manager Mihai Predescu explained in a memorandum to TVR’s board of directors that two reasons were at the heart of the failure in the UK.

  • “I believe there are two elements that led to this unexpected and unsatisfactory result.
  • The first is the new voting system in the semi-finals. This year’s edition was the first in which only the public voted in the semi-finals. Audience from 16 participating countries, excluding home country.
  • (…) The number of votes received in each country was converted into points. (…) Then the results were summarized by country.
  • Romania received votes, but not enough to get into the top ten,” said the head of the Romanian delegation.

Mihai Predescu claimed that Teodor Andrei had an honorable presentation, but the problem was the music, to which the representative of Romania approached, noting that several participants would have faced difficulties for the same reason.

  • “I believe that our product, although artistically and technically correct and valuable, did not meet the expectations of the voters.
  • To support this idea, let me remind you that San Marino, also with a rock song, scored zero points, Ireland, also with a rock song, did not qualify, and Germany, which went directly to the final, also with a rock song. , finished in last place,” the head of the Romanian delegation at Eurovision 2023 also emphasized.

Teodor Andrey was noticed by the public and accused of a hate campaign that unfolded on social networks.

“As a personal summary, our contestant presented himself well on the Eurovision stage. He talentedly performed an original piece and managed to attract the attention of the public (proof and an organized hate campaign on the Internet). We did not live up to the expectations of the active Eurovision audience that voted in the semi-finals,” Predescu also wrote in the report presented to the TVR board of directors.

The head of the Romanian delegation believes that “Romania’s play was very well received by the audience in the hall, which was very evident during the performance and especially at the end.”

“However, after processing the public’s vote, the work did not receive a single point in the competition,” Predescu notes in an explanatory note presented to the Board of Directors.

400,000 euros was the approximate cost of Romania’s participation in Eurovision, notes Libertatea.

Rock bands at Eurovision

Also, the song “Queen of Kings” performed by Norway’s Alessandra, which took 5th place, is similar to the songs of the Finnish symphonic rock band Nightwish.

And Croatia was represented by a rock band. Let 3 sang the song “Mama ŠČ!” and took 13th place.

Norway, Croatia and Australia played in the semi-finals to take a place out of 26 in the grand final, as was the case with Romania.
