The American “New Wave” has not said its last word: the screening of its latest film Martin Scorsesein which the two fetish actors of the 80-year-old director join forces for the first time, Leonardo DiCaprio And Robert DeNirowas the highlight of the day on his red carpet Cannes Film Festival.
After Harrison Ford on Thursday, it was the turn of another legend of American cinema to prove on the steps of the famous festival that he is still alive: Scorsese, winner of the Palme d’Or in 1976 for Taxi Driver, director, chairman of the jury in 1998, one of the biggest names in the world cinema, presents the film “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
Despite not being nominated for the Palme d’Or, the film attracted a huge audience this evening as many wanted to catch a glimpse of the stars before the official first screening. Cate Blanchett, Naomi Campbell, Isabelle Huppert walked the red carpet… With the appearance of Scorsese and his two main characters, the crowd doubled their votes, as everyone wanted an autograph, a selfie…
Aside from some stills released by the director at the end of April and the music for it, which has just been uploaded online – and that portends a tense plot – the film is being kept under wraps. Scorsese transports two of his favorite protagonists to a new universe, the universe of the Osage Indian tribe, who own land rich in oil, and are suddenly killed or disappear.
DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkart, a man in love with a Native American woman (played by Lily Gladstone) who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy hatched by tycoon William Hale, also known as Robert De Niro. An FBI agent (played by Jesse Plemons) takes charge of solving crimes.
The director wants to show how some Americans have “succeeded in rationalizing violence even at the expense of their loved ones, simply by saying: this is the culture. One team comes in, another one goes out,” he said recently in Los Angeles.
The film, 3 hours 30 minutes long, introduces “forgotten period of our past”, said DiCaprio, who was originally going to play an FBI agent but opted for a more complex role and spent a lot of time with the Osage natives. About 40 of them took part in the film and some of them were in Cannes today.
The $200 million film was filmed in Osage neighborhoods. The goal was to “immerse yourself in this world,” Scorsese insisted, despite the heat and the coyotes ravaging the Oklahoma plains.
