The Ukrainian group Tvorchi, which will represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest, was scheduled to perform at the Kyiv Central Station on Friday when an air raid siren forced the artists to hide in the basement, AFP reports.
The band will represent their country at next month’s Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool after the UK agreed to host the competition in place of Ukraine, which won in 2022 but was unable to host the 2023 edition due to war.
“That’s the way it is,” said the band’s producer Andriy Hutsuliak to the wail of sirens. “We are confident in our air defense.”
At the end of the alarm, the duo performed unannounced for surprised passengers in the station’s vast, Stalin-era lobby, decorated with chandeliers and mosaics.
The concert was aimed at promoting a campaign to buy incubators for premature babies run by United 24, an online donation platform supported by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
At the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, they plan to sing the song “Heart of Steel,” which “symbolizes strength and courage,” said Kenny, one of the two band members, stressing that he is proud to represent Ukraine.
“The main thing for us is to win the fight and bring peace to the country,” Hutsulyak added.
