Golden Globe with Spielberg – McDonagh and in the background … Oscar

“I am your master, Jarod Carmichael, and I am going to tell you why I am here. I’m here because I’m black.” So the American comedian, who presented the 80th Golden Globe Awards yesterday morning, began his opening speech to laughter and applause, some of which were rather awkward. After a year of abstinence due to the scandals (racial and financial) that hit the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association, the movie stars are back in their seats for expensive champagne, some to celebrate, and others to … drown their pain, in a reward, however, well ” distributed” and with a few surprises.

Steven Spielberg is definitely happy. The veteran director this year put his soul and cinematography to good use with Fabelmans, which won awards for Best Drama Film and Best Director. “I have been hiding from this story since I was 17 years old. I put obstacles in my way to this story. There are parts of it in many of my films. “ET” and “Close Encounters” have a lot to do with it, but I’ve never had the courage to say it outright. (…) And then the pandemic came along and I thought maybe none of us would get a chance to tell our story again,” Spielberg said as he stepped away from the microphone. At the upcoming Oscars, he will have (at least) a great competitor in front of him. Martin McDonagh saw his “Ghosts of Ininnerin” walk away from yesterday’s awards with three awards for Best Comedy, Screenplay and Best Actor for Colin Farrell. The latter’s victory came as no surprise, at least not as much as Austin Butler’s dominance in an equally dramatic category. The big — and Oscar-winning — favorite there was The Whale’s Brendan Fraser, but the latter’s announced Golden Globe boycott likely robbed him of the award, leaving it in the hands of The Whale’s rising star. Elvis.”

As for the female roles, everything was more predictable here: the charming Cate Blanchett from “Resin” prevailed over the equally beautiful Michelle Williams (“Fabelmans”), although the two will certainly be close in voting for the Oscars. Worth noting, of course, is Michelle Yeoh’s win for Comedy, as well as the overall phenomenon of the year “Everything,” which also landed a second male lead with Ke Hui Quan.

The golden globe, however, also means the small screen. It was there that happened, perhaps, the biggest surprise of the evening, when the epic, but newly minted “House of the Dragon” left behind the last cycle of “Better Call Saul”, as well as the ingenious “Severance” in the category of best drama series. In comedy, by contrast, everything was clear: Quinta Branson’s Abbe Elementary won three awards. Another such was Zendaya for Euphoria, while the (inimitable) Jennifer Coolidge also took the stage for her work in the recent excellent second cycle of The White Lotus.
