Scottish actor Gerard Butler has revealed he burned his face after accidentally rubbing phosphoric acid on the set of Airplane, his new feature film that recently opened in cinemas, NME reports.
Butler, who stars in the film as a pilot who manages to crash-land his plane but ends up in a war zone, said the acid accident happened during filming, in which he tries to repair a tear before takeoff.
“No matter what I do, I manage to get hurt,” he joked on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” recounting an acid accident with his hands between two wheels, “pretending to know what I’m doing “.
“Every time I take my hands out, they’re covered in blood and green liquid, right? And I thought, ‘I don’t know what that green liquid is,'” he said.
Butler stated that the scene was filmed on a hot day in Puerto Rico and that he was sweating profusely during filming.
Gerald Butler, in the box office after the acid accident
“I rub my face and suddenly it goes down my throat. It’s in my mouth. It’s in my nose. It is in my eyes. It burns my face and it really does. It turned out that it was, in fact, phosphoric acid,” he told Seth Myers about the mysterious liquid.
“And the pilots watching there were yelling ‘No!’ and I thought I was burning alive. So it was intense. It burned me for a few hours, but it was great for the series,” concluded the Scottish actor.
Butler probably doesn’t have too many regrets about the accident, saying that Airplane marked his first feature film return to the box office after several unsuccessful projects and was praised by fans and critics alike.
Airplane currently has a 74% approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator from film critics, while it has scored an incredible 95% from fans. On the IMDb site, it is rated a little weaker – 7 out of 10.
In its first weekend of release, the film ranked fifth at the US box office, still dominating Avatar: The Way of Water directed by James Cameron.
